"Tell me the plan again."
I swivelled around on the bar stool, a single brow raised in exasperation. "That's the fifth time Shota."
"Tell me," he insisted.
I sighed, slumping down on the breakfast island. "I follow you into the house, going ahead to clear the path using my quirk. Easy. At the same time, we keep an eye out for Eri and save any hostages. During that time, I must not show myself to any of your hero companions and as soon as I find Eri, we are to leave the premises immediately and attempt to leave the city or find a safe place by any means necessary. Happy?"
Shota nodded stiffly, sliding onto the bar stool beside me. Whilst his swirling thoughts may have been concealed, micro expressions on his face had a way of exposing his worry. A muscle in his jaw twitched relentlessly, his eyes clouded with a train of unidentifiable thoughts.
I may have been new to offering comfort via physical means but it simply felt right to reach out and smooth the hair away from his face. Shota visibly swallowed nervously, offering me a flitting glance before focusing on the grey marble of the counter top.
"I know you're worried. It's ok. We've had to go through a lot worse," I told him, weakly attempting to make him feel better.
Evident hesitation flashed on his face before he shut his eyes tightly and heaved a low sigh. "Too many things can go wrong. We've had to rush this, it's only leaving more room for mistakes. It doesn't help that UA students will be on the mission too. They're my students. The last thing I want to do is send them in this early into their course."
I nodded, finding his sense of responsibility exceptionally noble. My fingers skimmed the line of his jaw softly before gripping his chin and turning his face towards me.
"You are not alone on this. I get the feeling that you shoulder all your burdens alone. Don't. Your life matters as much as everyone you want to save so act like it," I reminded him sternly. "Not sure how much it helps, but I'll be there every step of the way. I'll have your back so just focus on what you need to do and let me do the rest ok?"
Shota's eyes bore into mine with an extraordinary depth; I couldn't tell if he had heard a word. Nevertheless, I held his unwavering gaze and waited for his response. It didn't take long before he slid a hand to the side of my neck and brought my face to his, foreheads pressed against one another. He shut his eyes, breathing in deeply.
"I can't tell if I've made things worse. Communicate with me here," I murmured quietly, attempting to alleviate the heavy mood.
The hint of a smile graced his features before he showed me those bejewelled eyes. Shota pressed a kiss to my forehead, my cheek and the corner of my lip.
"You have successfully destroyed any hope I have and I am now drowning in an indescribable emptiness," he retorted with a straight face.
I gave him a deadpan look before rolling my eyes. "At this rate, I'll be carrying you on my back to the battlefield."
"Would you?" he asked hopefully.
"How are you even a qualified hero, Shota?" I joked.
"I blackmailed the hero commission."
"Ha ha," I laughed sarcastically.
He toyed with my hair, one arm effectively acting as a rest for his head on the kitchen island. I studied his features not so discreetly and every so often catching him doing the same back.
"A penny for your thoughts?" he asked.
"What does that mean?" I frowned, still unfamiliar with the common idioms and sayings of the present day.
