The sliding door of my room was shoved wide open. A resounding bang of the wood colliding yanked me out of my dreams and back to the real world where three of the division members were barging into my room.
My heart raced having realised that I had overslept significantly and allowed it to happen again. Since I'd begun showing more ability than the other members at around the age of 16, some of them had thought it would be fun to barge into my room early in the morning without my permission and shove me out of bed.
The first time it happened, I felt a pang of pain in my ankles where they had sent a jolting kick. My body snapped into consciousness with beads of sweat dripping down my neck and my breaths coming out in short intervals. They towered over me and all I could remember was their resentful and repulsive grimaces as they yelled words at me that I couldn't decipher. Sounds blended together as I pulled the covers closer to my chest, left only in a tank top and shorts. The only light filtering through was the flicker of candles from the main hall, making the burly men around me terrorising figures of shadows and giants.
The moment my head snapped back into the moment, I pushed through them and scrambled to stand. The blanket in my hands never left my body, covering the skin I was terrified to expose. An echo of laughs rang around the room as they shoved a hand into my shoulders and knocked things about in the one place that I had thought was only mine. It was a living nightmare and ever since, they had made it a habit to barge into my room whenever they pleased.
Once I'd realised they would never stop, I began waking up two hours in advance. Due to the consistent training I had to keep, I was unable to sleep two hours earlier but sacrificing that time of rest was more important to me than experiencing the invasion of my room at my most vulnerable point.
For the first time in years, I had overslept. It was happening again. Their headache inducing voices shook my foggy head into focus and within seconds my body vaporised on instinct. I shadow walked to the small desk nearby and threw on the shirt strewn on my chair.
"I'm awake. You can get out," I spoke through gritted teeth. My voice wavered slightly to my dismay.
A string of laughs sounded and I could almost feel a shiver run down my spine. That familiar feeling in my stomach appeared, like I was about to throw up but it could've been mistaken for anxious butterflies.
"We went out of our way to give you a grand morning and this is how you show your gratitude. Tut, tut. Did they forget to teach you manners when they were beating you as a kid?" asked one of them.
His face wasn't visible in the lowlight provided from the hall but if there ever came a day where I was able to free myself from this prison, I would find this prick from the sound of his voice alone and make him wish he had never been born.
With a shaky exhale I gripped the nearby desk for support, knowing how tense my white knuckles must've looked. Truth be told, I had no idea what I could say. Sure, I was strong and could fight a certain number of people at the same time with the help of my quirk but something about the atmosphere in this place... No matter how much confidence I had gained in the past few months, I found that I always felt so small and weak in this place.
They had battered this impression into my head and liked to make a point out of it so often that I knew if I even tried to really stand up for myself, I would simply crumble. At that moment, I glanced up at the giants towering over me as they had all those years ago for the first time. My mouth was dry and my vision still blurry from sleep, I could barely even stand up for myself with words.
With a sigh, I dropped my head and rubbed my eye. "I said that I'm awake now. We leave soon for the mission, I need to get ready."
My voice sounded alien to my ears. It was hoarse and low from having been rudely interrupted in my sleep but more than anything it was quiet and much less forceful than I intended. Another round of laughs soon followed and with a few more seconds of lingering, they filed out of the room.
