She never showed. The battle concluded, the house sank and Overhaul was defeated with a multitude of fatalities that questioned the success of the operation entirely. Even so, she never showed.

Y/N was supposed to be there, waiting for them both just as she had promised. Shota knew something had been up. He should've stopped her but he knew that if he prioritised anything other than Eri, she'd never forgive him. The young girl was shaken and afraid, her power spiralling out of control in the aftermath of the fight.

Shota accompanied her and his students to the hospital where everyone was treated accordingly. The entire time, cold sweat ran down the back of his neck and nausea gripped him by the throat.

Where was she? Why hadn't she shown?

Police reports concluded that many had failed to escape the collapse of the house and that operations to clear the site and dig up bodies would begin soon. Shota excused himself from the waiting room, barely making it to the bathroom to throw up the contents of his stomach with blurry eyes.

Every possible outcome ran through his head and not one of them made him feel even remotely reassured that she was ok. He wouldn't ever feel content unless she was standing by him and living in his house and doting on Eri like he imagined she would after they'd been saved.

Where was she?

He'd gone back. As soon as the circumstances had allowed him, Shota had gone right back to the site of the fight. He searched and waited and searched some more. He asked about and helped with the body recoveries, practically dizzy with the thought that the next body he'd pull out would be hers.

Even so, it never happened.

It should've been a relief that she wasn't amongst the corpses. It could only mean she was alive and out there somewhere, no? Then why was he constantly on edge, bolting awake from nightmares in the dark and hallucinating the sound of her voice where she once laid in his bed?

Weeks went by. It was a cycle of wondering and questioning, where had she gone? Why did she choose to be gone?

He'd seen it in her eyes, in the tone of her voice. There were tears behind her words and a farewell in her eyes that he wanted nothing more than to stare into for eternity.

Sometimes, Shota wondered if he'd imagined her entirely. Y/N didn't exist on the public register nor in any of the private government files. She couldn't be found in photos or headlines, nor on the tongue of those that were captured and questioned. All that hinted at her existence was a single crumpled piece of paper with her name messily scrawled on one side, his on the other.

It wasn't until Eri woke from her coma did he realise she wasn't just his secret nor was she a figment of his imagination. The young girl had been approved to move in with him and he had taken a liking to her gentle and well-behaved nature. She appeared to take Y/N's words desperately to heart.

Upon finding out she was nowhere to be found, the girl wept. Shota could only hold her, comfort her, tell her the lies he'd been feeding to himself to stop him from going out on a search for her every night. His heart ached in a way it had never once before, a feeling almost physical and drastically uncomfortable.

As Eri grew more comfortable in his presence and the presence of the UA students, she opened up. She would ramble about Y/N often, remembering all the little things they'd done together and all the things Y/N had taught her. Sometimes it felt as if she would walk into the room at any moment, as if she'd been living with them and they were just waiting for her to come home. Secretly, they both hoped so.

Eri and Shota bonded over their love for Y/N. It was all they could do to hold themselves together, to not feel as if they were mourning her passing. She had just disappeared. She wasn't gone permanently. Surely she would be back, healthy and overjoyed to see them. Nevertheless, there was little they could do to search for her.
