Racing through hallways with flashing lights and unstable grounds was just as nightmarish as it sounded. Coupled with the occasional scream or battle roar echoing from somewhere deep within the house, I was getting whiplash trying to locate the main hall.
My legs had gained a new surge of energy to carry me through the crumbling corridors as I focused all my intentions on saving Eri. The bang of a gunshot caught my attention, bringing forward the memory of the weapon I'd seen in Chronostasis's hand when Shota and I had spied in on the meeting with the League of Villains.
Soon after, a cacophony of destruction and explosions followed from one distinctive direction. I followed it till I reached a gaping hole in the wall where a set of double doors had once been. On the other side, smoke was settling along with debris sprinkling down from overhead.
I spotted the shadows of figures dodging and darting away from attacks as the visibility became clearer. My heart lurched when I laid eyes on the green of Sir Nighteye's hair, beside him an injured Rock Lock. Who had they encountered since we'd separated and where was Shota?
Sprinting through the wrecked doorway, I scanned the vicinity quickly and identified a head of dark waves just stumbling backwards from a rock that had shot up from the ground. My heart stopped for a touch too long at the sight of him in danger but he quickly achieved stable footing and took down his opponent.
Immediately, I jumped in to knock out the gang members approaching the heroes from various angles. With a swift jab to the back of the neck or a kick to the head, they fell with ease. It cleared the space for the heroes, who eyed me suspiciously but didn't deny my help.
Again, my eyes searched for Shota. When I found him once more, he was reaching forward with a hand outstretched and a face gentler than I had ever seen. I frowned, confused by his actions.
It was only when a lock of silver hair and a horn peaked out from behind the protruding rock did realisation dawn on me. My heart soared at the sight of her, my lovely little girl alive and taking the hand of the man I realised I had come to love.
Upon taking his hand and realising it was safe, she ran forwards hastily and threw herself into his arms. It was quite possibly the most relieving thing I had ever seen. The tension in my clenched jaw subsided marginally but there was still the problem of getting out of here.
My eyes identified the source of the largest explosions, the ones sending suffocating dust in our direction as the odd rock formations crumbled and the high roof began to groan with pressure.
The place was about to cave in.
There certainly wouldn't be enough time to defeat all our enemies and escape safely. Once the dust had cleared enough, I noticed a grotesque figure decked out in a fancy beak mask. Overhaul. What had happened to him? He was bigger with a crazed look in his eyes, his eyes that darted around the room rapidly as if searching for something.
Upon looking over at Shota, Overhaul's eyes flashed. He wanted Eri.
A green flash zipped by. The same chills I felt earlier rose up my spine as the young trainee hero I'd witnessed break through the wall jumped overhead and launched a mighty attack on Overhaul. The superpowered kick he delivered sent the yakuza boss flying backwards and into the wall.
An inkling of worry began to grow in my stomach as the impact created zigzagging cracks in the walls around him. In slow motion, they grew until they reached the ceiling that was already under threat of crushing us all.
Upon recovering from the surprise attack, Overhaul glanced up and took notice of the state of the crumbling house. Desperation and anger creased his features, his eyes burning with the struggle of taking on so many opponents. An ambush was a brilliant plan, I had to hand it to them.
