Where it began? Hm, that's tough...

Second ye- No, first year! I didn't attend Heiwa Middle until my second year of middle school, but I knew Yukie during my first year. Kinda.

Y'see, back then, my sister's boyfriend was a student at Heiwa so I'd end up going there alot and just wandered on my own while he and his dumbass friends were up to whatever they did. I eventually crossed over to Middle and ended up meeting Yukie. You should have seen her back then, she was so shy! Aaaah, she was so cute right from the get go...

Ahem. So you see, we already knew each other when I moved to Middle for my second year. Yeah, it was just a few encounters here and there, mostly me being annoying and she putting up with me, but that made it easier for us to become friends when the year began. Eventually we picked up Satoru and Jiei, but they're irrelevant here.

The real stuff begins on our final semester of the second year. Not much had changed.

"We're so close to the end, I can smell the freedom! I can't wait to tell this stupid place goodbye!"

"You moron, we still got the third year before we're out of middle school hell." Satoru deadpanned. "Me and Jiei are gonna meet the guys, see ya at lunch?"

"Maybe later. We're gonna have lunch with Haruma-san and the other girls from the club to catch up." Yukie explained.

"Oh sheesh, why do I gotta go listen to you hens cluckin' about lame stuff for a whole hour, I'm not even part of that club."

"You promised, Harui."

"Right... You're lucky I'm the greatest best friend ever, you know?"

"I consider myself more blessed than lucky."

"Yuck, go praise this stinky tanuki somewhere else, it's cringe." Satoru sighed. "Come on, Jiei."

Well, that's not exactly true.

I was the same, Satoru was the same, Jiei was the same he was at the time, but Yukie had grown. She had gotten less shy. She was more comfortable with people. In fact...

She even got a boyfriend a week later.

At the time I didn't understand why, but... It never sat well with me.

It felt... Weird?

No.

It felt wrong.

That feeling grew inside me like festering mold.

February, near Valentine's. That feeling overcame my limits.

We were having lunch with that Haruma and the other girls from Yukie's club. As usual, I just tagged along because I knew Yukie and ended up sitting a bit far from them... I never really knew anything about those girls besides them being as bland as possible.

So bland that they spent every lunch they had with Yukie talking about her b... Boyfriend...

"Have you kissed yet? Have you?! Have you?!"

Hearing them talk about it... It made me sick.

"Of course they have, silly! They've been together for over a month now. Yukie-san, have you seen him without his shirt on?"

My stomatch twisted.

"That's too vanilla! Yukie-san, have you two made out yet?!"

The taste of my lunch was eradicated by the taste of vomit.

"You three are so childish that it hurts. Who cares about any of that? Those are such non-things in the bigger picture. Yukie-san, have you given it some thought?"
