Summer came and went and before I knew it, I was anxiously waiting for Bridget to return home. No, she didn't run away again. I actually decided to let her spend summer with Joe in the UK. Well, Joe and I decided. She was away for whole two months and although I was getting updates every single day, I just couldn't wait to hug her.
Against the advice of my team, I found myself at the airport, my heart racing with anticipation. Yes, it might have been a logistical nightmare for my security, but the thought of waiting even a moment longer to see her was unimaginable. I had to be there the second she stepped off the plane.
I waited on the private tarmac at LAX and anxiously watched my own plane land. The door slowly opened and I was full of nervous jitters. Bridget. She was taller, her hair longer, and there was a new confidence in her stride. My heart swelled with pride and an overwhelming sense of love. I rushed towards her, not caring about the flashes of cameras that could be spotted from the distance.
"Bee!" I called out, my voice cracking with emotion.
She turned, her face breaking into a wide, beaming smile. "Mom!" In an instant, she was in my arms, her hug as tight and comforting as I remembered. I held her close, tears of joy brimming in my eyes.
"You've grown so much," I whispered, pulling back to look at her. She had indeed. Not just in height, but there was a maturity in her eyes that hadn't been there before.
"I had to make sure I could still beat you at basketball," she joked, her eyes twinkling with the same mischievous light I had missed so much.
I laughed, wiping away a stray tear. "You wish, Bee. I've been practicing."
As we settled into the comfortable leather seats of the car, Bridget's excitement bubbled over as she recounted her experiences in the UK. She spoke animatedly about the places she visited, the British accent she tried to mimic, and the small, everyday moments with her dad. However, amidst the stories, I sensed a subtle shift in her tone.
"It was great, Mom, really. But..." her voice trailed off, a shadow of uncertainty crossing her face.
"But what?" I asked gently, sensing her hesitation.
She sighed, looking out the window. "It's just... I felt a bit out of place. Dad's new life, it's so different. His fiancée, she's nice, but I don't think she really... gets me."
My heart ached hearing her words. "I'm sorry, honey. That must've been hard."
Bridget nodded, her eyes meeting mine. "It was weird. Like I was visiting someone else's life, not really fitting in."
I squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You know, sometimes it takes time to adjust to new family dynamics. And it's okay to feel like you don't belong right away."
"Yeah, I guess," she said, her voice soft. "But it made me realize how much I missed our home. Our craziness, our music sessions, even our late-night baking disasters."
I chuckled, remembering the last time we attempted to bake cookies at midnight and ended up with a kitchen covered in flour. "Those were epic disasters, weren't they?"
She laughed, the sound like music to my ears. "The best kind. I missed us, Mom. Our life."
"I missed us too, Bee. So much," I replied, feeling a warm glow in my heart.
"I also realized," Bee continued, "how much more invasive my life would've been over there. The paparazzi were less intense... but the fans..."
I let out a little giggle, "I know, I found out where you were at before you even called me, just by looking at stan Twitter."
Bee rolled her eyes, pretending she's offended, "don't encourage their antics! But I just imagine.... Growing up like this. Dad doesn't have the same level of security because he doesn't need to. Or want to."
I nodded, sighing. "It's different. It works for him and I can respect that. But I think if he was spotted with a blonde child at any point in his life... your cover would've been blown. You could never even attend a normal school."
"I think so too," Bridget sighed with me, "he still thinks this whole thing was a mistake."
I rolled my eyes, "I bet he does. It's not like we were the ones calling the paps ourselves!"
Bridget chuckled, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Well, according to Matty, that's exactly what we were doing. Stirring the pot for fun."
I let out a laugh, shaking my head. "Hey, I thought we were past the whole Matty chapter."
She shrugged, a playful smirk on her face. "Maybe, but it seems there's always a new chapter waiting around the corner, isn't there?"
Her words hung in the air, hinting at something unspoken. Sensing her playful mood, I decided it was time to open up about the latest development in my life.
"Speaking of new chapters," I began hesitantly, "there's something I've been meaning to talk to you about."
Bridget raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "Oh? This sounds serious."
I took a deep breath. "It's about Travis Kelce."
Her eyes widened slightly. "The football player? Wait, are you two...?"
I nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. "Yes, we're seeing each other. It's still pretty new, not out to the public yet, but I wanted you to know first."
Bee rolled her eyes, feigning offense. "And here I thought I was your number one priority!"
I chuckled, reaching over to ruffle her hair. "You'll always be my number one, Bee. But it's nice to have someone else in my life too."
She smiled, a genuine warmth in her eyes. "I'm happy for you, Mom. Really. As long as he treats you right and doesn't smell like an old wet rag that's never showered, I'm good. Oh, and no passive aggressive comments about me either."
I laughed at her reference to Matty's ill-fated remarks. "Don't worry, Travis is nothing like that. He's kind, funny, and... well, you'll see for yourself. He's coming over for dinner tonight. He's really excited to see you."
Her expression brightened at the news. "Okay, I'll give him a chance. But just so you know, I'm not making it easy for him. He's got to earn his place at our table. I'm not making the same mistake twice."
I grinned, feeling grateful for her support. "Wouldn't expect anything less from you, Bee."
As the car pulled into our driveway, I felt a sense of contentment. Despite the ups and downs, the changes and challenges, Bridget and I were navigating this journey together, stronger and closer than ever. And with Travis joining our little world, who knew what adventures awaited us next.
