I heard Bridget's cries from down the hall, her voice laced with distress. Rushing to her room, I found her sobbing into the phone. "Dad, please, I didn't mean it! Why are you behaving like this?" she cried out.
Without a second thought, I gently but firmly took the phone from her shaking hands. "Joe, this is Taylor. We need to talk," I said, my voice steady but filled with concern.
Bridget looked up at me, her eyes red and swollen from tears. I motioned for her to sit, trying to offer her some reassurance as I focused on the call.
"Taylor, what the hell is going on? Bridget just told me she called Travis 'dad'!" Joe's voice was a mix of anger and disbelief.
"Joe, you need to understand, it was a slip of the tongue. She's a child, and these things happen. It doesn't mean she loves or respects you any less. You should applaud her courage for even wanting to talk to you about this," I explained, trying to keep my composure.
"This is exactly what I was afraid of with keeping her in your public lifestyle. It's affecting Bridget, and now she's getting confused about who her family is," Joe countered, his voice stern.
"Joe, Bridget loves you. She's upset and confused, and she needs your understanding, not your anger. She's growing up in a complex world, and she's trying to navigate it as best as she can. Just like your fiancée became a part of her life, so will Travis," I said, my voice softening, trying to bridge the gap between them.
"Well, this is too much for me. I don't know how to handle this," Joe admitted, his tone softening slightly. I was confused by his otherwise understanding demeanor. He was possessive over his daughter - I understood wanting what's best for her, but treating her like that when she is displaying her vulnerability was simply unacceptable. I couldn't help but note the unfairness of it all - Joe was allowed to move on, Bee was allowed to interact with his fiancée and even live with them for the summer. But when it came to me and my future, he made a big deal out of it. If I didn't know better, I'd think he was doing a really poor job at alienating my daughter from me.
"Joe, she needs her father right now, not someone who walks away when things get complicated. We need to work together for Bridget's sake," I urged, feeling the weight of the situation.
There was a pause on the line. "I... I'll think about it, Taylor. I just need some time," he finally said.
"Please do, for Bridget. She needs you," I sternly replied, ending the call.
Turning to Bridget, I pulled her into a hug, her tears soaking my shirt. "It's going to be okay, Bee," I whispered, stroking her hair. "We'll get through this together."
As Bridget and I sat there, wrapped in a tight embrace, the door opened and Travis entered. He approached us with a gentle, caring demeanor, his eyes filled with concern.
"Hey," he began softly, sitting down beside us. "I just want you both to know, I'm here for you. Bridget, I care about you a lot, like you were my own. And Taylor, I'm here for you too, in every way I can be."
His words were heartfelt, and I could see the sincerity in his eyes. Bridget looked up at him, her tear-streaked face searching his.
"I don't want to take Joe's place, that's not my intention. But I want to make sure that , Bridget, and you, Taylor, can experience all the love and support you deserve," he continued, his voice warm and reassuring.
I could feel a sense of relief wash over me. Travis's presence brought a calm to the storm we were in.
"That means a lot, Travis," I managed to say, my voice still shaky from emotion. "Thank you for being here for us."
Bridget sniffled, wiping away her tears. "Thank you, Travis," she said quietly, a small smile beginning to form on her lips.
Travis wrapped his arms around both of us, pulling us into a comforting group hug. Despite the tension, this is all I ever wanted for Bee - to have a male role model who will be there for her just as much as I am. She deserved two loving parents, even if they came from unconventional backgrounds. No one can replace her dad, but if her dad is behaving like an ass, I have to step in and make sure she realizes not all men are like that. It's for her own good.
