Two years later, Jazlyn and Kera were putting up the last of the decorations for the graduation reception.
"So, how come I'm not graduating with them? I'm the same grade they're in." Jazlyn asked.
"Well, you have to be in the Jedi Temple and school at 5 years old to be in the big graduation." Kera said. "Don't worry though, lots of padawans have private graduations and knighting ceremonies."
"You've been in the temple since you were 5. Why didn't you graduate with everyone?" Jazlyn asked. Kera was silent for a second.
"The council did not think I was ready." She said at length. "They held me back." Jazlyn stared at Kera, surprised. She thought Kera was the readiest of any Jedi she knew.
"Why?"
"My master had a vision that I would endure some great difficulty or tribulation as soon as I took the trails. They weren't sure if I was ready for that."
"Oh." In silence the two girls finished setting up the decorations.
"Come on. Let's go watch the graduations." Kera said.
~ ~ ~
Jazlyn and Kera stood in a shadowed corner as the graduations began. They witnessed as a student named Jacen Skywalker was awarded with Greatest Combat, Grei Sivoy the Strongest Mind, and Friften Cenoby was the Greatest in Balance. Jazlyn, as she saw Friften, felt a sudden feeling of...connection. She didn't know why she felt that way.
Jazlyn and Kera, because of their behind-the-scenes work, had watched all those students that graduated that day through the years, and they had seen their progress and growth. It was nice to see them succeed.
Yet as she watched, Jazlyn couldn't help but think about the others that were not present. People like herself and Kera. "They're only the best in their class. What about people like us? There are people in this Temple that are not recognized that could be the best."
