A few days before Jazlyn's birthday, Kera ran up to her friend excitedly.

"Jazlyn, guess what?! I'm going to take the trials the day after your birthday!" Kera exclaimed.

"Oh, my word, That's awesome!" Jazlyn said, "It'll be three days after yours and a day after mine."

"Yup!" Kera was silent for a moment. "You think I can complete the trials?"

"I know you can, Kera."

"Oh yeah, and when I get knighted, if I get knighted---" Kera began but Jazlyn cut her off.

"You're getting knighted. Don't doubt yourself!"

Kera smiled and continued, "When I get knighted, I'll be going on a mission, I might not be seeing you for a while..."

"Can I go with you?" Jazlyn asked.

"No, not this time." Kera said quietly. Jazlyn's eyes filled with tears. She realized this would be the first time in six years that they wouldn't be together.

"I'm going to miss you...a lot." She said sadly.

"I know. I will too." Kera said.

Two days passed and Kera had her 16th birthday. Two days after that, Jazlyn turned 14. Their birthdays were filled with joy, but also with a hint of sadness as the trials and Kera leaving drew closer. The day after Jazlyn's birthday, Kera and her friend headed for the room where the trials were going to take place. Jazlyn had to wait outside.

"May the Force be with you, Kera." Jazlyn said. Kera nodded and smiled.

"Thanks Jazlyn." Kera said and she entered the room.

Jazlyn still had to complete her duties throughout the day, but she returned to wait in the evening. As soon as she got there, Kera came out of the room. She looked tired; and she was covered in sweat.

"Kera! How'd you do? Are you ok?" Jazlyn asked.

"I'm not sure how I did. I did my best, that's for sure. I'm fine, just tired." Kera said, answering Jazlyn's questions. She took a calming breath and pushed back her hair from her face.

"I'm sure you passed." Jazlyn said, feeling her friend's worry and held her hand. Kera's eyes widened for a split-second feeling Jazlyn's hand was cold as ice, literally. Less than a second later her hand went back to its normal temperature. Kera quickly looked at Jazlyn, but she didn't seem to have noticed anything. In fact, Jazlyn was singing quietly.

"Uich gwennen na 'wanath ah na dhín

An uich gwennen na ringyrn ambar hen

Boe naid bain gwannathar

Boe cuil ban firitha"

That song was from a well-loved story. Kera knew the translation because Jazlyn had told her long before.

"You are not bound to loss and silence

For you are not bound to the circles of this world

All things must pass away

All life is doomed to fade."

It was a sad, lovely song, and it complimented Jazlyn's voice quite well. Her voice was no longer childish. It was clear, beautiful, and strong, ringing through the empty hallway like a bell.

"That was really nice." Kera complimented. Jazlyn looked up at her with a smile.

"Thanks." They walked hand in hand to their rooms because Kera had to change. Then they walked to the Council chamber where the Masters were waiting for Kera. She entered the council chamber and Jazlyn stayed outside. About five minutes later her friend came out of the room.

"I passed! I passed the trials!" Kera exclaimed.

"See? I told you that you would!" Jazlyn said happily, "When are you going to be knighted?"

"Tomorrow. I'm going to be knighted tomorrow." Kera said.

The next day Kera and Jazlyn went to the Hall of Ceremonies.

"Jazlyn." Luke called. She walked over to him. "I would like for you to be part of the ceremony. Stand with the Masters and hold your lightsaber in front of you. When you feel my signal, turn on your lightsaber."

"Ok." Jazlyn said with a nod. She went and stood in the circle of Masters; her lightsaber held before her. Kera knelt in the center of the circle. The lights were turned off and Jazlyn now understood why Luke told her to feel the signal. When the signal came, she and the Masters turned on their lightsabers.

Luke stepped up to her and held his lightsaber over her shoulder saying, "By the right of the Council and the will of the Force, Kera Swan you may rise. You are now a Knight of the Jedi Order." He stepped back and Kera stood up. Jazlyn and the Masters shut off their lightsabers and the lights turned on.

"Thank you Master." Kera said.

"How's it feel to be a Jedi Knight, Kera?" Jazlyn asked as they left the Hall of Ceremonies.

"It's...kinda hard to explain...it's a good feeling though." Kera said. They were quiet for a little bit and then Jazlyn asked, "When do you have to go?"

"I'm leaving tomorrow morning." Kera said. Jazlyn nodded and did her best to not look sad, but Kera could feel it.

"I'll probably come back soon. I shouldn't be gone for long." Jazlyn nodded again.

"Do you want to race?" Kera asked, trying to make her feel happy again.

"Sure." Jazlyn said. Kera took her hand and felt it ice cold again, but this time it didn't get back to being warm.
