Jack had spent his whole life watching the lights and everyone enjoying the magical sounds of the sleigh bells ringing around him. He wasn't able to hear it for one fact: he's Deaf. Everyone pitied him but he found it quite relaxing as he didn't feel he was required to hear. Most hearing people signed up about how they hated how loud it got on the streets when Christmas shopping or just the noises in general. Being Deaf didn't mean he couldn't still appreciate the holidays with his best friend, Alex.
Alex on the other hand was hearing. He heard everything and loved to explain to Jack what he heard fluently. How is Alex almost fluent in sign? When he first encountered Jack in kindergarten he ran home and asked his mother if he could go get books to learn sign. From there he learned to communicate with Jack and that's basically all he uses now. He even does it while talking to hearing people which makes him laugh. But Alex follows Jack practically everywhere and illustrates the sounds around them. The children's laughter, the ding of the church bell, the sound of ice breaking even.
Each time Jack would sign back, and you don't get annoyed about it?
Alex smiled to himself and shook his head as he approached where his best friend stood looking at the lit-up Christmas tree in Rash Field Park. As Alex got closer he saw the lights echoing in the taller boy's hair and on his glossy winter jacket. Alex smiled as he stood next to him and saw the lights dancing in his immense brown eyes.
Jack turned to Alex quickly and signed, What do you hear?
Alex took a moment to think before carefully describing the sounds of the fire near them, the sound of people talking and strolling around, the sounds of the children's voices as they saw the tree, the ice skating blades on the ice and the singers singing Christmas songs. He took his time to describe them to Jack whose face glowed with delight. When Alex got done he looked into his best friend's eyes who had a dreamy look on his face.
Alex jokingly signed, If I didn't know you so well I'd think you're daydreaming about being able to hear.
Jack laughed at it and quickly signed back, No it just interests me to think about what it may sound like.
Alex nodded understanding slightly before feeling Jack tug on his jacket and rushed to sign, Why don't we go and ice skate?
Alex smiled as his best friend pulled him over to the ice area. Alex shook his head as the taller of the two stared at the ice while they waited in line. Once up to the little booth to get blades Alex had to nudge Jack who snapped out of his intrancement with the ice and signed.
Could we have 2 ice skates, please?
"Sorry sir but I'm not going to place charades with people like you."
Alex looked at the defeated Jack who was about to walk away when he grabbed his best friend's arm and said, "He asked for 2 ice skates. I thought you guys were supposed to be kind to all customers!"
The man behind the counter mumbled something before handing the two each a pair of skates. Alex paid for it before stomping away with Jack whose face was flush.
Once on the ice Jack hesitantly signed, You didn't need to do that.
Yes, I did. Someone needed to stand up for you!
Jack smiled and the two skated around. Alex wasn't going to tell the real reason he did it. Not only did he think someone needed to stand up for him but Alex also loved him. He put away his question and they skated. He'd save it for another day.
