Chapter 228 - He corrected himself and called "Great Big Grandpa" after being smacked by his mother. (1)
It was a 2-hour flight from City S to Jiang MingYuan's home town. Leaving after lunch, the three of them got off the plane at 4 PM and it was already 5:30 PM when they finally arrived at his place by car.
Jiang MingYuan's home town was a small city by a mountain. The town flourished through tourism and was a relatively affluent town.
After walking through a stone-paved market and a river, they had arrived at where they would be staying.
These houses were aged with white walls and grey brick roofs. The river ran in front of the front door and the water were so clear one could see the bottom of the river glistening under the sun.
Jiang MingYuan had one suitcase in each hand. He walked across the bridge, placed the suitcases down before he reached out and held Cheng Huan's hand and bent over to pick up XingXing. Pointing at a house not too far from them, he said, "We are almost there."
That house did not look any different from all the other ones around them. They were all two-stories structures by the river. There was an enclosure around the house and a few evergreens poking their bare branches out from the inside, lending the place quite an interesting look.
When they arrived outside of the enclosure and pushed open the carved iron gate, revealed in front of them was a very busy front yard. Obviously it had been taken care of by professionals and it was blooming even in the winter time.
There was a small path in the middle of the yard. Jiang MingYuan, walking in front, walked through the yard, pulled out a key from under a flower pot, and opened up the front door.
The house looked very traditional from the outside but the decorations inside were nice. The living room was very spacious and all of the furniture were made out of redwood. They looked expensive. Leaving their luggage in the living room, Jiang MingYuan took the mother and son upstairs.
Just like his apartment, there weren't a lot of rooms in this house. There was a master bedroom, a spare bedroom, a guest bedroom, and a study. The master bedroom was where his parents used to stay. It was vacant this year as Mother Jiang did not come. Jiang MingYuan had no intention to move in there. He walked straight toward the spare bedroom and opened the door up.
It was said to be the spare bedroom but it was still very spacious. Facing the door was a set of table and chairs made out of huanghuali. It was dividing by a screen and one must go around the screen to be able to see the gigantic Babu bed.
On the frame were carvings of humans and other lucky creatures. They were painted a gold color and looked aged.
With the exception of Jiang MingYuan, it was the first time the other two had seen a bed like this. Seeing how the two were curious, the man explained some of its background.
Sure enough. It was a piece of antique carried down from the Qing dynasty.
Cheng Huan was dumbfounded. She felt that she would have insomnia if she was to sleep on an antique bed like this. Luckily, she thought to herself, this was Jiang MingYuan's room and she didn't have to try to resist that temptation.
As soon as she had let out a sigh of relief, the man next to her said, "All the beds are of the same type in this house. I can have someone bring over a different one if you don't like them."
Mother Jiang never like these beds. She said they were remnants from the old days and had asked repeatedly to have them swapped out or she would not return here to stay.
Jiang MingYuan had arranged for people to have the bed switched out every year in the past and swapped them back after she had left. He had it ready already and he could have them swapped as soon as Cheng Huan said the words.
Cheng Huan's look changed colors a little. "Same as this one?"
"More or less."
Having said that, he took them over to the guest bedroom.
The guest bedroom was slightly smaller than the spare bedroom but the decors were more or less the same except for the carvings on the pillars of the bed. This one was themed from common folklores. The carvings very so detailed that one could see the manes on the horses.
Cheng Huan refused to even think about how much this was worth. She worried that it'd make her hate the riches. Looking past those wood carvings, she finally didn't ask to have them swapped out.
