Chapter 2.2 - Unexpected Tasks

"Why do I have to do these?!"

After a minute or so after starting to pull weeds from the ground, Chris started to rampage.

Daniel raised his voice."Just shut up and do it."

"But, Daniel...."

While Chris was looking at him apologetically Daniel was already engrossed in his work.

I let out a sigh seeing them act like old couples who went into a fight.

But like them, I need to focus on my work as well.

Our job was to secure an area for camping. And since it's a place full of trees finding a place like that would've been impossible. Unless,

"I wonder how Mr.C found a place like this here.", said Chris as his gaze wandered all over the place.

Alex, stood up from the ground, anticipating this moment."Apparently, until a year ago, researchers were flooding into this scene like moths to a flame because of this sudden enigma. For overnight campings, they were the ones who cut the trees in this area. But for some reason, their curiosity waned as quickly as it rose and nobody came to visit it making this place filled with weeds and bushes as well."

"Woooaaahhh!!! That's our leader for you."

Hearing that Isabel was looking delightfully at her all-knowing boyfriend in action.

And there you have it...

For the time being our job was to procure a site for camping. Of course, others have their turn of jobs as well like cooking, washing the dishes, building the tent, and things like that.

Most of all I am impressed by the fact that a simple excavation experiment turned out to be such a productive event. Mr.C must've pushed his limits to make this not to mention Alex who took permission from the teachers to do all this.

Our job is going smoothly for the moment with all the members focusing on their work. After hearing the scolding from Daniel even the loudmouth is doing the job properly.

In that silence, a low strained voice can be heard from time to time. Out of curiosity, I raised my head from the ground to look.

It was Liz.

Seems like she's trying to pull something from the ground but won't come off. With all the bushes I cannot see what she's picking. Maybe it would be a tree root or something and if that's the case it won't come out just by using hands.

Hearing that Daniel also raised his head to look at her.

"Hey, the root won't come off that easily. You should use an axe or something."

"....Oh right!"She turned to him in surprise. "My bad! Sorry about that."

So my guess was right and she started to apologise to Daniel over and over like she's done some grave mistakes.

"Hmmmm...Well, doing heavy work is not a lady's job. So, Glenn, how about you do it?"

The proposition came from none other than Isabel who was barely doing any work. She had a few weeds in her hand to convince others that she was doing a good job.

Her words only struck me because I heard my name in the midst of it. Other than that I didn't hear what she said. Or more like I didn't care about what she said.

So I asked her at once.

"What was it again?"

With an annoyed look on her face, she said it once again.

"I said that you should do the heavy work since Lizzie is a girl."

With a paused look on my face, I looked at her beautiful face. "...And why should that be me?"

"Because others are busy with their work, genius."

-And what do you think I am doing right now?! That's it guys, I hereby declare that she is only a beauty in her appearance and don't be fooled.

And this was the first time I heard her saying things in such an authoritative manner. Usually, she's cheerful, calm and collected. But now...

Maybe she's acting like it because of me. After all, we never had a conversation before in the first place.

Not having the energy to retort I let out a sigh and made my way towards the supplies site.

"And while you're at it. You should go and get some water as well."

Without even trying to hear what I wanted to say she quickly went back to her spot trying to act picking the weeds.

Moreover to my surprise, none of the other guys said a word opposing her, not even Alex himself.

If this is the teamwork that Alex mentioned earlier, then I am glad to say that I am done with it.

Feeling dejected I made my way carefully through the overgrown weeds and into the open ground.

"E-excuse me!!"

A familiar soft voice called me from behind. That shyness in her voice is enough for me to recognise her.

I looked behind only to see that girl tightly gripping her skirt wallowing in her shyness.

"I-I should help you with carrying the water as well."

"....No, it's fine."

"B-but I insist! Please take me with you!"

She lowered her head apologetically again and again. She must be thinking that it's her fault.

Mmm.....what a pain! Even the others are not saying anything. Maybe that's why Alex didn't say anything earlier. That busybody!!!

"...Fine, suit yourself."

As I said, a bright smile bloomed on her face and faded as she became overwhelmed by embarrassment.
