We arrive at the banquet and climb out of the limo. First the twins, then Donovan. As he turns to hold my hand while I climb out, Dimitri squeezes my ass. I try to keep my face from revealing anything is off. Stepping out of the car, Donovan pulls me close as Dimitri gets out. Going out separate ways, we find our seats. The Carringtons spread out across the ballroom in order to capitalize on this networking opportunity. No speeches or formalities tonight, just a live band and great food, and making acquaintances. Tomorrow night will be much more formal.
Donovan is chatting with a man about our age. Shorter and stockier build, but very friendly. Donovan catches my hand and pulls me too him. "Jeremy, meet Madelyn Davidson, my girlfriend. Maddie, meet Jeremy Archer, we served in the Marines together." Extending my hand, I try not to grin to hard at hearing him call me his girlfriend for the first time.
Jeremy laughs good-naturedly, "You sure did go out of your league, didn't you Carrington." His arm around me, hand resting on my hip, " I sure did. I'm a lucky man."
The night goes on, introduction after introduction. While we were refilling the drinks, a sweet older grandmotherly woman approached me and Donovan, laying her hand on his arm, "Excuse me, ma'am, I was wondering if I could dance with this handsome fellow."
Donovan lights and hugs the woman, "Mrs. Burnasky! It's so good to see you!" He turns to me, with his arm around her, "Maddie, sweetheart, would you mind if I spin her around once or twice?"
Smiling at these two, apparently, old friends, "of course not! Go! Although if you don't come back, I know why." Teasing I add, "don't make me come find you Mrs. Burnasky."
Well, those two traipsing around the dance floor. I decide to visit the ladies room. After checking my appearance, I wash my hands and go to leave the restroom. As soon as I open the door and walk out, Dimitri blocks my path. "You've done well this week, Madelyn. I couldn't be more proud of your first week as my assistant."
I offer him a right smile, "Thank you, sir. I appreciate the opportunity."
He steps closer to me, a hand going to my waist, "you look beautiful tonight."
I take a small step back but hit the wall, "Again, thank you, sir. We should get back in there." I take a step to leave, my heart racing. I'm unsure if I want him to stop me or not. Either way, it doesn't matter.
He grabs my arm, "not so fast, Madelyn. You owe me more than a brush off."
That stops me. "Dimitri, you don't care about me. You wanted sex. And the sex was phenomenal, beyond anything I have ever experienced. But Donovan? He cares about me. When Jason showed up, you didn't bat an eye, he stood by me. That means something, Dimitri. Sex can be amazing, but I need more. You couldn't even kiss me."
He laughs, "I've kissed every inch of your body..."
I cut him off, "but you wouldn't kiss my lips."
Scoffing, he steps forward and grabs my wrists, he knee pushing my legs apart, pinning me to the wall. His lips on my neck make me gasp. "Dimitri..." He ignores my cry, as his mouth works its way down my chest. I try to pull my wrists away but he justbtoghtens his hold, painfully, "someone could see us," I proclaim.
But instead of pulling away, he presses his body into me, his face very close to mine as he says, "I'm not ready for this to be over." A tear slides down my cheek. He kisses my forehead, "and I don't think," a kiss to my cheek, "you are either." With that, he touches his lips to mine and kisses me. More tears spill.
I pull my lips from his, "Dimitri, no." He doesn't listen, his mouth against mine before I finish speaking. Demanding my mouth to respond to his as his thigh puts pressure on my center and his tongue slides into my mouth.
I moan involuntarily just as a voice overtakes us, "let go of her."
Pulling my mouth away from Dimitris, I see Donovan. He looks hurt, he looks angry, he looks unsure of what he walked in on. Dimitri steps back a half a step, my legs closing with his knee now moved. But he doesn't loosen his hold on my wrists, if anything, he holds them more tightly, digging his fingers into them.
"You're interrupting us, son. You can have her back later." Tears sting my eyes as they spill and run down my face.
"Get your hands off of her." At this, Dimitri does let go, and he turns to face Donovan. I rub my wrists and move to Donovan's side as he steps away from both me and Dimitri. I reach for his arm and he pulls away. "I'm not sure what the hell I just walked in on, but I'm going to need a minute, Maddie."
Dimitri just smiles and then walks forward, slapping Donovan on the back as he does. "I have to get back to our guests. Thank you for slipping away with me, Madelyn." He reaches around me, squeezing my ass. And with that, he's gone.
I stand there staring at him. "Donovan?" It's a plea. Begging him to look at me. He can't seem to bring his eyes to mine. I step to him and I wrap my arms around his waist, tucking myself into him. But he doesn't hug me back. "Donovan, please?"
He just shakes his head and places his hands on my shoulders and gently pushes me away. "I have to get out of here." He turns and begins heading to the exit, me trailing behind him. Once he bursts through the convention center doors, he finally turns to me, "I asked you to choose me, Maddie. I practically begged you to choose me." He sits down on the steps. Head in his hands.
I kneel down in front of him, gripping his forearms. "I chose you, baby. I swear." Sliding my hands up your arms to your hands, I try to lace my fingers into yours, "baby, look at me, I chose you. I know it looked bad, but I swear I wasn't participating."
At this he meets my eyes. "Don't lie to me, Maddie. It's hurts bad enough to find you with him, please don't lie to me."
I'm not sure how I feel about his lack of faith in me, but I keep trying. "I need you, Donovan. Please baby." It's then I notice the already developing bruises on my wrists from where he held me against the wall when I fought to pull away. "Look at my wrists, dammit. I swear to you, Donovan, I don't want anyone except you. I have never been as happy in any relationship as I have been this past week. Trust me, please." I start sobbing.
I sit there on the steps, curled at his feet, sobbing and he sits there, head in his hands not speaking. And that's how Rafe finds us. "What's going on?" I look up at him, Donovan doesn't move. "What happened? Is everyone okay?"
Only now does Donovan speak, "everyone's fine. Walk away, Rafe."
At that, Rafe laughs, "the hell I will, what happened?"
In this moment, I make another choice.
