Donovan thinks I want to be with Dimitri? I think back to our position, and from where Donovan was standing, it probably did look willing. But outside of that muffled moan, I didn't respond to his attempts this time. All I wanted was to get back to Donovan. And that's worth fighting for. So I make another choice, and if it costs me Donovan, it looks like I'm already losing him anyway.
I look up to Rafe. "Your dad was pushing himself on me and Donovan walked in on it. It looked compromising, but I was trying to get away."
Rafe looks from me to Donovan and shakes his head. "I'm sorry, but what?"
I stand up now, and Donovan interrupts, "forget it. Go back inside, Rafe."
But Rafe doesn't budge, "sorry, man, but I want to hear what she has to say.
Donovan says, "Maddie, don't." But I see this as the only way to gain control.
Taking a deep breath, I look at Rafe and begin to spill out everything. I tell him about my out of the blue promotion, about the actions of Dimitri and I tell him about last weekend. I tell him about the photo and the ride to dinner, I tell him about the comments made to me by Dimitri - including the incidents I hadn't told Donovan about. I tell him everything leading up to tonight. And then I tell him about tonight, and how that was the first time he has ever kissed me. I even tell him how I found so much of it appealing, until it wasn't. And then, I hold out my wrists, bruises looking uglier now than they did 10 minutes before. By the time I finish, he looks angry.
He gently holds my wrists and looks at them, then pulls me in to a hug, "I'm so sorry, Madelyn." He holds me and kisses my head in a brotherly way. He turns, looking toward Donovan and says, "why the hell would you doubt her? You know better than anyone how heartless he can be. Dammit, Donny, he slept with your wife! You think the title of girlfriend would deter him?"
Donovan must have stood up and walked to us. Because I feel his hand on my arm and in a moment it's his arms around me, not Rafes. He's holding me tightly, face buried in my hair and the crook of my neck. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. It looked like..."
I pull back and stop him. "Don't. I know what it looked like, but I promise you, baby. I didn't want that. I want you."
He nods, and kisses my forehead, then turns us so we can both talk to Rafe. Donovan speaks first, "you knew about Elizabeth?"
Rafe gives him a curt nod.
"Why haven't you said anything?"
This time, he answers him, "because if you wanted us to know you'd have told us. Me, Dominic, Gio, hell, I think even mom knows although she won't acknowledge it. But you didn't come to any of us Donovan. You shut everyone out for a long time when you and Elizabeth split. And honestly, this week is the first time in a long time I've had my big brother."
Donovan let's go of me and takes a few steps away from us. We let him go. A few silent moments later, he walks back over to us. "So what do we do?"
Rafe shrugs, "I don't know man. Talk to Dominic? See what legally we can do? Because beating his ass doesn't feel right when it's your dad."
Donovan turns to me, "are you okay with telling Dominic? And Gio and my mom at some point? Because if this goes the wrong direction, they are going to have to know."
At this, I shake my head. "Donovan, I don't even really know your mother. And you want me to tell her I was fucking her husband, and am now dating her son? Oh! And by the way, I'm still married to my own husband of sixteen years. I doubt that's going to get me a welcome to the family from her." I'm panicking, Rafe was one thing, but Maryanne Carrington? I can't do it.
And then, at the worst possible time as I feel like I'm about to melt down, Dimitri and Dominic walk out. The three of us turn towards them. Basically ignoring us, Dimitri says, "we thought you all left, we just called the car. Ready to get out of here?"
Dominic however can see something is off. Jogging down the steps to us, "what happened?"
Before I can speak, Rafe says, "ask him," and nods his head to indicate Dimitri.
Dimitris eyes darken for just a moment. Then, he turns to Dominic. "Madelyn and I have been having an affair. Your brother walked in on a shared moment earlier, and wasn't too happy."
Rafe stops him as Donovan starts towards his dad, "Don't," he says to Rafe, "Stay with her." He turns back and says to his father, "so she asked you to bruise her wrists as you forced her against the wall?" I feel Dimitri shift his gaze to me, "she likes things rough. If you look at her hips and tits, I'm sure you find fading bruises there as well."
I shake my head at that, "Dimitri, I said no. I told you no."
Pretending to care, "I'm sorry, Madelyn. I didn't realize you meant it. I thought it was a part of the fun. You resist, I give orders, you comply. You've said no before and then would fall into my arms. How was I to know this wasn't part of our game?"
Donovan finally speaks, "that's enough!" He moves to stand in front of me. "This woman has been through enough. Her marriage, full of years of emotional and verbal abuse, just fell apart. All she's known are men that take advantage of her. You saw a broken woman, whether she knew it or not, and you preyed on her need to feel desired. Well, dad, guess what? She now has a man that makes her feel loved, and desired, without making her feel guilty afterwards. I'd point out that that man is your son and that she's your sons girlfriend now, but given that you have fucked my wife before, I doubt you care."
Dimitri tries to speak up.
"No. You don't get to defend yourself right now. You're going to walk down these steps, we are all getting in the car back to the cabin, and when we get there, Dominic will draw up the papers. You're stepping down and giving the company to me and to the twins and to Gio. Tomorrow night you make the announcement. And then, you're going to stay the hell away from Maddie. And, while we are at it, stay the hell away from Lauren, April, and Bianca as well. My brothers don't deserve the hell you've put me through."
With Rafe and Dominic at his sides, Dimitri decides not to argue. Without a word, he turns and walks down the steps to the sidewalk. Wordlessly, these three men around me, we do the same. Not a single word is spoke until we arrive back at the cabin.
