"Ma, have you seen the dupatta of my black kurta set?" I yell from the top of the stairs. I was running late for the party and my mother was going to have my head for sure.

"It's there only check properly. Do I wear your clothes? Why are you asking me?" she yells back from her room.

"It's not there." I yell again. A few minutes later my mom comes up the stairs and barges into my room. She shuffles a few of my clothes pulling out the missing piece of cloth I was searching for the past ten minutes.

"Then what is this called?" she glares at me.

"It was not there when I was searching for it. I don't know how it came there. I searched that pile I swear." I say.

"Yeah, it got legs and walked here even before I could. Can't even search for clothes properly how will you manage an entire household after you marry? Only God should help you, I have given up. What will your future husband's family say? You already can't cook, can't clean. They will say that I have taught you nothing. Learn something as soon as your exams get over Nidhi. I'm not asking you to learn anything complicated. Just something basic like rice, sambar and gravy to fill your and your husband's stomachs" she looks at the mess in my room and starts putting away the used clothes on the chair to the laundry basket.

"Don't worry about our stomachs ma, I already have a plan for that." I say applying a bit of lip tint on my cheeks.

"Oh, what is that?"

"Monday through Friday, we will make noodles, bread jam and peanut butter sandwiches. Saturday, we will go to his parent's house for lunch and dinner. Sundays we will come here because you make the best chicken dishes in the world."

She stops throwing clothes into the basket and looks at me. "Is this your plan?"

"Yeah, do you like it? If every Sunday become too much for you, you and my future MIL can discuss and can take alternate Sundays and Saturdays. I don't have any issues with that." I raise my hands in surrender. The jeans I wore 4 days straight to college hits me straight in the face before I can even blink.

"Ma" I start when she's already next to me and holding the tip of my ear. "It's not enough that I fed you for 22 years, now I have to feed both you and your husband? Every week? Chicken? I'll search a boy from the furthest place in Bengaluru and marry you off to him soon. Then I'll see how you will come home every week for lunch and dinner in the weekend traffic."

I release her hand from my ear and rub it between my fingers muttering "If you don't like cooking for your own daughter and son-in-law then say that directly. You don't have to be so mean about it. I'll swiggy whatever we want."

"Ayoo, that's not what I meant kanda, I meant that you should learn some cooking at least for yourself. I wonder what goes through your head sometimes." She hits her forehead shaking her head.
