HOW COULD KLAUS EVER FORGIVE MIKAEL? Maybe in a dream? Does he forgive his father for leaving him too often as a child? Maybe for scaring him with unexpected rage? Or making him feel nervous because there never seemed to be any rage there at all? Should he forgive his father for the excesses of warmth or coldness? Should he forgive his father for pushing or leaning? For shutting doors or speaking through walls? For never speaking or never being silent? If he forgives his father, what is left?

Enola understood why Klaus could never forgive Mikael. He was callous and cruel as he dragged her through the unfamiliar woods towards impending doom. He had taken her hostage for the second time. The last time he stabbed her with a knife, this time he just might stab her with Papa Tunde's dagger of unimaginable pain. She still couldn't fully wrap her head around the fact he was able to pull the dagger out of his very own chest without so much as a struggle. She had seen the type of pain and torment that weapon had caused. It made her all the more anxious to be in his presence. She could only hope that the rescue squad had been deployed.

"I have seen the kind of pain that blade causes," Enola noted.

"I have fought through more pain than anyone—living or dead." Mikael smirked, coming to an abrupt stop in the middle of the woods. "But once I feed, I shall be restored."

"Don't you only feed on vampires?" Enola questioned nervously.

"You needn't worry, my dear. Your blood will remain untouched. I can't very well kill the leverage." Mikael scoffed as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Once I threaten to tear your heart from your chest, Niklaus will hesitate. And in that moment of weakness, I shall end him."

"This is stupid—the two of you going round and round trying to kill each other." Enola blurted in annoyance. "You're obsessing over the death of someone whose fatal flaw is that he was fathered by another guy."

"You are the enabler of the weak. No wonder he seeks your company." Mikael growled. He paused. "Do you hear that?"

"Music," Enola breathed, growing more uneasy by the minute.

"And where there is music, there is food." Mikael smiled, dragging Enola to the edge of an open field where some college kids seemed to be enjoying a good bonfire. "Well, well, well—what have we here? Hillbilly Halloween. How perfect."
