"IT IS A GIRL."
Being born a girl is an awful tragedy. Your consuming desire to mingle with road crews and sailors and soldiers—to be a part of a scene—is all spoiled by the simple fact that you are a girl. A girl always in danger of assault and battery. Your consuming interest in men and their lives is often misconstrued as a desire to seduce them or as an invitation to intimacy. That is why Klaus was worried by the news.
They expect women to teach their sons how to be better. But why? Nobody had to teach women how to be kind. They learned it naturally. They learned it easily. They watched and listened and took turns and sat pretty. They do not understand. What could they possibly teach them better than they could just learn from breathing? Why is it their job to curb their brother's anger when they have got their own well stewing and bubbling? Why do they have to reign in their father's spite when they can barely survive on their own at night. Why is it their fault how men act when the men are supposed to be leaders and authorities? You do not tell a drunk driver that it is okay to do as they please. If they need a woman to show them how it is done maybe every single one of them should hand over the keys. That is why Enola was relieved by the news.
"Are—Are you sure?" Klaus stuttered anxiously. He wasn't at all disappointed by the news. He was just nervous. He was protective enough of one daughter. How would he cope with having two? Especially with a war on the horizon. He isn't saying that he would be less worried if it were a boy or that women were incapable of protecting themselves. He is saying that he felt a stronger urge to protect all the women in his life. After all, it is thanks to them that he has a more human side.
"She is a professional. Of course she is sure." Enola scoffed. Klaus frowned. She sighed before turning to the doctor with expectant eyes. "But in hopes of easing my husband's worries, would you mind explaining to him why you are absolutely sure that we are having a daughter?"
"There are multiple reasons," Doctor Diaz informed. She pointed to the monitor where they had a clear view of their baby. She glided the transducer across the very visible baby bump in an attempt to explain the situation. "Reason number one, I am trained to tell the difference of the body parts in the womb and I can clearly tell that it is a girl."
"And reason number two?" Klaus questioned anxiously.
"The gender of the baby always depends on whether or not the sperm carries an X or Y chromosome," Doctor Diaz continued. "An X chromosome combines with the mother's X chromosome to make a baby girl and a Y chromosome will combine with the mother's X to make a boy." She looked between the two with a bright smile. "Congratulations!"
