"You know you can drive right?" Hwayoung said, her car pulling up to the valet of the event Jia was invited to, courtesy of Haechan's father who was very fond of her as he noticed the efficient increase in sales. Hansung Corp. decided to hold a charity gala as it approached thanksgiving, inviting potential and existing investors, shareholders and business executives. It wasn't an annual thing, but seeing how well the company was performing and expanding globally at such a high rate was something to be celebrated for.

"I know" Jia said, hiding her smile a little bit

"I know that look" Hwayoung said with a smirk and Jia blushed

"Haechan's going to be there" she said, biting her lower lip that was tainted with a ruby red lipstick, matching the necklace she was given along with tonights outfit, again courtesy of Haechan's father.

"Well no wonder you didn't want to bring your car, you wanted to go home with him huh?" She asked, poking her side making her jolt

"Alright alright, you caught me" Jia said with a sigh, hiding the heat that was consistently making her cheeks grow darker in colour.

The valet guy eventually took Hwayoung's keys, allowing the two girls to step out of the car, helping each other with their floor length dresses. Jia opted for a black tulle ball gown - style dress while Hwa presented herself in a burgundy backless satin dress, the two dark colours complimenting each other as they interlinked their arms.

"This place looks insane" Hwayoung said, astonished at the intricate renaissance inspired details in the interior of the building, stairs leading up to the door that enclosed the grand hall

"Wait up!" A voice said from behind them and she turned to see Jeno and Jaemin, in dashing all black attire, suits that were more extravagant than the ones they wore around the office.

"Nice date" Jia joked as she saw the two stand infront of them

"Well you were already taken so.." Jeno teased and she laughed at the comment, not putting too much thought into it before she went ahead to introduce Hwayoung to Jaemin who hadn't met her yet. Jeno on the other hand was far too aware of Hwayoung, the two of them almost becoming besties at one point at Jia's last birthday party.  The doors were opened by security to reveal and the most extravagant party, a huge chandelier in the ceiling shedding a yellow and golden hue onto the people below.

"Jia" Jaemin whispered, pulling her back by her arm slightly to get her attention

"What's up?" She asked, smiling at the boy who looked sheepish under her stare

"Is your friend single?" He asked and she rolled her eyes before nodding her head

"Please just be my wingwoman tonight-"

"Absolutely not, you can talk to her yourself-"

"I'll let you have my kids"

"Jaemin-"

"Jiayi, Jeno, thanks for coming!" Haechan's father exclaimed, gathering attention of the crowd that he was surrounded by and the group introduced themselves to everyone else. The conversation with the head of finance in the Busan district was not as appealing to say the least, especially when her eyes had caught a glimpse of Haechan who walked down the steps to the grand hall, conversing with a girl.

She had short hair, a silk dress that left a trail while her shoulders stayed covered with the fur shawl, she was extravagant. His eyes gleamed as they conversed with her, laughing at whatever they were previously joking about, his eyes not glancing at her direction.

"I'm going out for a smoke, It's already too much glitz and glamour in here" Hwayoung said and Jia was more than ready to accompany her, not wanting to leave her friend alone.

"I'll catch you guys later" She said to Jeno and Jaemin, quickly taking Hwa's hand and following her out, the doors closing behind them as they treaded down the pavement steps.

"Never invite me to a work party again" Hwayoung said, lighting up a skinny cigarette as she leaned against the wall. Jia chuckled, shaking her head at the girl who wouldn't even describe this as a party.

"I invited you because there's a free three course meal" She corrected and Hwayoung's face lit up in excitement at the mention of food. Before Jia could add to her statement, her phone buzzed inside her clutch and she took it out to reveal the contact name. She looked at Hwayoung who shot her a knowing look, shooing her away with her hand to allow her to talk to the boy who had her attention.

"Hey" she said on the phone to him

"Hey" he sighed, the noises of chatter and the distant music from the hired string quartet in the background

"What's up?" Jia asked, pretending like she didn't know what he was up to

"I'm at my dad's charity gala and I'm bored out of my fucking mind. It's already been like three days since I saw you...I miss you" he said with a huff

"Why don't you come find me then?" She asked with a smirk, as she walked up the steps to the big doors, Hwayoung quickly putting out her cigarette to follow behind her

"What?" Haechan asked, furrowing his eyebrows at the statement

"By the way, that suit looks amazing on you but if you find me in time maybe I can be the one that takes it off?" She teased and Hwayoung made vomiting noises at the sound of her statement before walking ahead. She heard Haechan's chuckle over the other end of the phone, dark and raspy as if he had a few drinks prior.

"You should've told me you were gonna be here" Haechan said with a somewhat stern voice

"Why? Worried I'd catch you with the girl you were chatting up?" She asked, irritation evident in her voice

"You're one to talk— I just saw Jeno, you better not have came as his date" he warned, voice growing darker as he scanned the crowd for the nth time, awaiting her answer

"Don't worry Lee, I know better than that" Jia said and he chuckled, hearing the music playing through her side of the phone now, knowing he was closer to her

"Someone's being extra good tonight" he teased, eyes landing on Hwayoung who threw him a knowing smirk, his eyes soon meeting the back of the girl he had almost grown to memorise

"Exactly, so come find me" she said, lowering her voice to make sure no one around her could hear her, before ending the call, placing it back into her clutch as she grabbed a glass of champagne. Haechan took long steps to approach her, is primal instincts kicking in like he usually would around her, having this intense need to make it known to her that she was his.

"Checkmate."
