Haechan opened the office door abruptly, locking it behind him before taking his jacket off with frustration after he finished up with his performance review, surprisingly nothing bad being said about him.
"Jia..what the fuck was that?" Haechan asked, breathlessly almost, as he looked at the girl who had her front facing the window as she watched the sun set behind the local skyscrapers through blurred eyes.
"Jia-"
"I told you to knock. Is it that hard for you?" She asked with a wavering voice and he unclenched his jaw, realising that something else was at play here
"Hey are you...are you okay?" He asked, walking around her desk to her silhouette. The lack of response worried him and he reached his hand out to her shoulder but she was quick to shake it off and distance herself.
"Don't touch me" She said, voice softer than ever, being careful to not show too much emotion but the way she was already sniffling made it obvious to Haechan that she was upset
"Okay just...tell me what's going on" Haechan said, leaning his body against her desk, giving her time to think to herself before speaking again
"Why are you messing around with me?" She asked, and Haechan immediately let out a sigh
"What?" He asked, not believing that their friends with benefits situation was what drive her to this extent
"You heard me. You can sleep around and be friends with benefits with anyone else, why me?" She asked, finally getting the courage to turn around and face him
"I don't understand baby I-"
"Don't baby me right now" she said, shaking her head at the pet name she would usually find endearing
"Jia I thought you wanted this too" Haechan said, eyeing her carefully
"I did...I just didn't realise I was being vulnerable to someone that only wants my job and can't stand being around me" she said, quoting Yuki's words from yesterday that were etched into her head, biting her lower lip to stop herself from crying
"Jia that's not-
"You didn't even deny it...so don't try and lie to me" She said, letting the tears escape, and one turned into another until she was fully crying, wiping her tears away on the back of her hand. It ached Haechan to see her like this, he tried reach out for her again yet she only took a step back, closing herself off and not allowing herself to be vulnerable again.
"Jia please just let me explain" Haechan said
"What? Explain to me that you're just doing all this to get a job...I don't even fucking want it anymore" she said, sniffling
"I just said that so she wouldn't catch on to what we're doing...it was your idea to not tell anyone. i just went along with it so she wouldn't find out for the safety of the both of us-"
"And I appreciate that! But...fuck Haechan it's not like I'm asking you to tell her I'm your girlfriend or something but...how could you just stand there and let her say all that. Do you truly believe in what she-"
"Of course not!"
"Then why didn't you say something?"'
"Because I was trying to keep it a secret!"
"Is keeping this a secret really more important to you than how I feel...is it really more important to you than respecting me? Do you really not even wanna be associated with me?" She asked and Haechan sighed, defeated at the statement
"I'm sorry...I-I thought I was doing the right thing" he admitted, realising his mistake.
"Well if talking shit about me and not standing up for me even the littlest bit is your idea of doing the right thing...then I don't even know what to say to you" She said and Haechan bit the inside of his cheek realising he had been a bystander when he could've done something
"I'm sorry-"
"I know we said enemies but...fuck."
"Jia we're not enemies" Haechan said and she immediately shook her head
"Well we're clearly far from friends right? Friends stick up for each other regardless of the situation. Atleast that's what I did for you anyway" she said, betrayal evident in her voice as she remembered sticking up for Haechan, a guy she barely knew at that time, against Jeno, her closest friend.
"I'm sorry...I should've thought about you. I wanted to step in I really did but I just thought...I'm really sorry" Haechan said, standing up. He walked over to her, slowly embracing her, lightly enough incase she wanted to pull away but to his surprise she didn't.
"I'm sorry, I'm an idiot" Haechan said, wrapping his arms against her waist
"Haechan I think you should work somewhere else today" She mumbled into his chest, and he sighed
"Baby please don't shut me out" he said, begging almost. They had come so far only to be back at square one.
"Please?" Haechan asked again as he got no response.
"Haechan I can't...be around you right now" She said, shaking her head as she pushed him away and he obliged. As much as he didn't want to, he had already messed up enough.
"You can help Jaemin with the sales report, just take any desk-"
"I'll take Renjun's desk" Haechan said and Jia scoffed
"Haechan I just need space"
"I'm giving you space! Baby there's a door between us like...that's already too much" Haechan pouted playfully and she couldn't help but let out an amused laugh at his childishness
"There we go, the demon has left your body" Haechan said as soon as she broke out into a smile.
"I'll be outside if you need me" he said, kissing the top of her forehead quickly before she could say anything, leaving her office but making sure to take one more glance at her again as he smiled reassuringly before shutting the door closed.
