Auristela Aveline decided to enter the coffee shop, after reading the sign 'Jitters' was the name of the place.
"Hey, can I use your phone here?" Auristela asked softly as she stopped the first barista she saw, the young African American waitress quickly turning towards her with a notepad in her hands.
However, despite turning towards Auristela to speak with her, the young woman didn't seem to raise her head as she finished scribbling in her notepad.
"We're not supposed to let anyone use the phone without buying something beforehand," The barista trailed off as she finally looked up, getting a good look at Auristela's tear-stained face. "but I guess I can make an exception."
With that, the woman motioned her hand to behind her, her eyebrows furrowing softly as she mentally made up so many reasons as to why the young woman in front of her came in crying.
"Thank you so much," Auristela spoke with a soft smile on her face, ignoring the pity-filled look the woman was sending her as she quickly glanced down at her name tag. "Iris."
"It's no problem," She waved off, before turning around and pointing towards where they kept the store's phone was kept on the wall. "the phone's right that way."
"Alright," Auristela spoke giving the woman a grateful smile before walking away directly towards the phone on the wall, wiping her tear-stained face as she grabbed it.
For a second she struggled to remember the number of anyone, usually always having her cell phone on hand, although she had only one family member left, or at least someone close enough to be.
Dorothea Parker was and hopefully is, Aurisetla's Father's head secretary, the woman that'd practically raised not only him but Auristela as well even when she was sent to boarding school, they exchanged letters and emails.
And when she was able to, she quickly dialed the number into the phone, breathlessly waiting for the woman to pick up, which she did after a few rings.
"Hello, Dorothea Parker here, how may I help you?" Dorothea's southern voice came over the phone in a somewhat light and calm tone, however, it immediately brought tears to Auristela's eyes.
Hearing the voice of a woman she had come to think of as her Grandmother after apparently so many months, then there was the fact that she, Auristela was officially an orphan.
"Dorothea," Auristela spoke through shuttered breaths attempting to hold down the sobs that wanted to spring from her chest since she didn't want to draw too much attention onto herself. "it's me, Auristela Aveline."
And hearing the voice of someone she saw as a Granddaughter, she had taken care of and sent letters to for years, Dorothea quickly paused whatever work she was doing, nearly launching from her chair out of pure shock and joy.
"Star, My Little Star, sweetheart, is that you?" Dorothea asked as a large smile came over her face, tears of joy falling down her face as she spoke out the nickname she'd given the little girl as a child.
"Yes, Yes ma'am, it's me." Auristela continued to speak despite the tears that'd begun to fall again, the young woman attempting to wipe them away as quickly as she could.
These tears instead out of relief, the relief of finally talking to someone that she knew, someone whose voice she'd heard the entire time she was growing up.
"God, when did you wake up, shouldn't the people at Star Labs have called me?" Dorothea asked more to herself than Auristela, as she wedged the phone between her ear and shoulder.
The woman quickly moved things around as she tried her best to gather all of her things, Dorothea already planning to be on the next flight to Central City.
At this point, she was the only family that Auristela had left since her father had been an only child and his father before him, whilst her mother was an orphan like she was now.
So she felt the need to be right alongside the young woman in such a time of confusion and grief.
"I-uhm woke up a few minutes ago," Auristela stuttered out nervously, the remembrance of what had happened and what she'd been told at the lab once again playing in her mind. "I left the lab, it was all too much there."
Hearing Auristela's words, Dorothea almost immediately paused her movements, the older woman was honestly surprised by what Auristela was telling her.
Although she knew someone could discharge themselves from the hospital, she didn't think that them letting her go so soon was good for Auristela's health.
"Is that safe," She asked confused as she thought of all the problems that come from this, just up and leaving the hospital. "where are you, should I come to pick you up?"
"No, no I'm fine, I'm-" Auristela spoke quickly not wanting the older woman to worry too much before she moved on to what she wanted to ask her. "is my Dad, did he uhm?"
She trailed off not even knowing how to ask the woman such a question, never expecting it to have to leave her lips, especially after losing her mother.
"Oh sweetheart he was-" Dorothea tried to explain what had happened, the woman not wanting to give this information over the phone. "he was declared d.o.a on the scene, we had his funeral a few months back."
Almost immediately a choked sob came from Auristela's lips, and the young woman quickly moved her hand to cover her mouth.
"Jesus fuck." Was all the woman could mutter as she tried her best not to burst into sobs in the cafe, she didn't need any more attention drawn to her.
"Sweetie where are you, I can send someone to bring you home?" Dorothea asked in a soft voice, the woman not even mentioning the girl's cursing; something she would normally do.
Yet instead of softly taking up the woman's offer, Auristela shook her head, quick to attempt and rid herself of the unshed tears she was forcing herself to keep down.
"No I'll uhm, I'm just going to head back to the estate," Auristela spoke with a soft sniffle, the girl taking a deep breath to recollect her thoughts. "I stop at some coffee shop, Jitters I think I-I just needed someone I knew to tell me."
"Alright," Dorothea said after letting a smiling sigh, the woman not quite sure what she should do to help the girl. "hurry home, I'll fly over as quick as I can."
"Okay see you soon." Auristela spoke softly, hanging up the phone after Dorothea repeated it back to her.
After hanging up the phone the girl paused for a moment as she laid her head against the wall, taking a few shuttered breaths as she did so.
