Hiccup grew up as a Viking on berk, an island just north of hopeless and a few degrees south of freezing to death. he idolized the Vikings that came before him and he couldn't stop staring at one girl in particular, but when he was fifteen he finally managed to shoot down a dragon, and not just any but the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself, everything changed. He went from being the useless runt of the village to the star in dragon training and it was all thanks to that nightfury, but that dragon also changed him in other ways. He no longer thought that the Viking way of killing dragons was right and, because of his success in the training, he would have to kill a dragon in front of the whole village, so during one of the dragon raids, he gathered his things and left. he traveled far and wide on toothless, the night fury and both of them gained the respect of dragons and humans alike, but in his old home, the dragon raids continued even after the year of his absence. Despite how cruelly he was treated, he couldn't let the innocent villagers or dragons continue to kill each other. He returned and, instead of being hailed as a hero, he was branded a villain they believed he was a demon and responsible for the raids Yet he continued to help both sides. Two years later, after a particularly harsh raid, Stoic, the chief, and Hiccup's father called his council to come up with a solution... the idea came from Spitelout, one who cared little for anything other than his own pride and power: give him what he could not get from merely ransacking the villages, a wife. He even knew exactly which woman to sacrifice: the one who was no longer useful. After Hiccup had left, he was presumed dead and, while most couldn't care less, one person broke at the thought of his death: his childhood crush and the one who fell in love with him and had remained that way for five years, Astrid Hofferson. Astrid had broken when she learned that the love of her life had disappeared, presumed dead, she had given up on everything. Once the strongest warrior on berk, now a mess who would be dead if not for Gobber, her one connection left to Hiccup, but even he was gone now- carried off by dragons just like Hiccup and his mother. Astrid accepted the proposition Spitelout had made without a second thought: she was already numb, so why not do something to benefit the village before she died? So just like that, the Village of berk called the elusive dragon master to bargain...
