Two Days Later
I jump off the last step of the stairs hearing my boots click on the hardwood floor. Dylan peeks his head out from the kitchen and I flash a toothy grin. "What's got you so cheeky today?" He yells retreating back to what he was doing. I step up to the kitchen leaning against the frame. "Nothing just ready for work today." He grins scrambling the eggs in his pan. "Ah I see then." I roll my eyes. "I can just be excited to work you know."
He snickers turning to me after pulling the pan off the burner. "Said no one ever. Besides not sure many people go out to work in the fields with that much makeup on." I huff folding my arms. "You think you're so funny?" He grins. "Yeah I'd say I'm a pretty comical guy." He pulls up a seat at the table and I pull up one next to him. "Isn't this what you wanted anyways considering you lied about our lights being out."
He hums. "So you are smarter then you look." I kick him under the table and he chokes on his eggs a little while I laugh. "I thought it would be best for you two to make up." I roll my eyes. "Oh please you really couldn't care less. If you had it your way I'd never have friends." He drops his fork touching my arm. "Now Serah that's not true. I genuinely want you to be happy. I'm not just your brother at this point. I'm your guardian and it's my job to keep you safe." I swallow sighing some. "I know Dylan. Thank you."
The door bells chimes and he smiles. "Lover boys here." I kick him once more before standing. "You had to ruin a good moment." He laughs. "I'm still your brother after all." I roll my eyes heading to the front door. I open it and am greeted by Dylan. He smiles widely at me. "Good morning." I smile. "Good morning." I hear a soft sound that almost sounds like someone clearing their throat. It's then that I notice the little hands clenching onto Jacob's worn out work jeans. I raise an eyebrow and he sighs.
"Oh right.." He says pulling the little girl out from behind him. "Serah this is my niece, Rylynn." I look down at her and back up to him. "A-Are you sure?" He just smiles at me and I crouch down softly. "Hi Rylynn, my name is Serah." She has on arm locked around a teddy bear and the other hand gripping onto Jacob's pants leg. "H-Hi Sarah." I point softly to her teddy bear. "And who's this?" She smiles widely. "This is Mr. Bear. He's my best friend." I gasp falsely.
"Mr. Bear huh? Well it's nice to meet you." I say gently shaking his paw. "You know what Rylynn?" She hums. "Mr. Bear says your his best friend too." She giggles. "Really?! Uncle Jacob never hears Mr. Bear talk!" I look up at him and he's absolutely beaming at me. I return my attention back to Rylynn. "Well Mr. Bear says that because Uncle Jacob is no fun." She pouts. "Mr. Bear that's not nice. Uncle Jacob is lots of fun." She nods softly. "Mr. Bear says he likes you more than Uncle Jacob. He's sad we are leaving today." I poke her stomach softly. "That's okay I'm sure we will meet again in the future. Right Uncle Jacob?"
We both look up at him gently. "U-Uh y-yeah of course." She giggles whispering to her teddy bear as I stand back up. "Rylynn we need to get going though your moms waiting I'm sure." She pouts. "Okay..." He looks back to me. "You're welcome to come or I can drop you off at the house." I grin. "No no I won't impose. I'm sure I have some work to get done." He hums. "Come on Uncle Jacob! Last one to the truck is a rotten egg!" I laugh gently watching them race each other to the truck but Jacob obviously let's Rylynn win.
*
"Damn it!" I yell hitting the ground with a thud. I huff rubbing the dirt off my hands before standing to pull on the hundred pound horse feed container once again. "Come on! Come on!" I groan hitting the ground again. I pull my knees up into my chest huffing. Violet scuffs at me and I look at her trying to catch my breath. "Yeah I know. If only Jacob was here right?" She throws her head back and I laugh gently. I dust my hands off standing back up to continue to tug on the container.
I place my hands on the metal handle pulling with all my strength but it's useless. "There's no way I can move this on my own but I'm a Bayne so I won't give up so easily." I place my hands back on the metal handle leaning my weight against it. For a second there I thought I was seeing things when I see a third hand grip the metal handle with me. "Need a hand?" My breath catches from how close he is to me.
He placed another hand on the handle and we pulled together successfully moving the bin. When we are done he opens the stable door letting Violet run free from her stable out into the pasture. I feel my face is warm still from being startled by his closeness. I pull the gloves from my hands sighing. "T-Thank you. I don't think I could have done it without you." He laughs. "Well you were trying to move feed that weighs more than you Serah."
I huff. "Hey I'm stronger then I look." He grins pulling the gloves from his hands. "Is that so?" I nod putting my hands on my hips. He chuckled some walking past me. "I guess falling on your ass a few times will do that to you." I huff letting my arms fall. "Were you watching me struggle?!" He turns around walking backwards out of the barn. "No but those dirt jeans tell me everything I need to know." I bend around to see I have mud stains on my butt from hitting the ground as many times as I did. I huff running after him out of the barn and he bolts off towards the house laughing.
Enjoy ❤️
