It's been three days since I left Jacob's house and I waited everyday on the steps for him to come for me so I could work but he never did. I say out on the porch today until 7 at night and I guess that's where we are now. I kicked some rocks as I waited. "Maybe he doesn't need the extra help today." I hear Dylan say from behind me. I sigh. "Think I can barrow the truck to go down and check on him." He smiles softly. "You like this boy huh?" I scuff. "Please he's a friend and God knows I haven't had one of those since I was 12."
Dylan smiles before reaching into his pocket and handing me the keys. "Just to the farm and back." I take the keys hugging him. "Thank you Dylan." He smiles before I pull away heading to get into the truck. I drive down to the farm parking once I've reached the house. I get out seeing nothing out of the ordinary. I head up to the door raising my hand to knock when the door swings open. "Oh Sarah...." I see him put the rifle he had down. "That's all I get." He swallows. "Do you know how many nights I sat outside until 10 at night just waiting for you to come get me?"
I scuff. "And you left me Jacob." I frown. "I needed you..." He reaches out for me and I shake my head. "Don't touch me." I say turning to storm off towards Dylan's truck. "Sarah wait!" I jump into his truck throwing it into reverse. I pull out his driveway and he stands in front of the truck. "Stop Sarah!" I frown. "Move!" He shakes his head. "You don't understand." "Jacob!" I glance over at the house seeing a little girl probably only 10. I push the gear up into park looking at him. "It's okay Selena. Go back inside." She clings to her stuffed animal before turning to go back inside.
I just stare at him from behind the steering wheel, in awe of what's happening. He comes around to the driver side opening the door. "Let me explain." I swallow thickly. "I'm listening." He huffs. "I was gonna pick you up that night. Three nights ago I promise. But I went out and bought some flowers for you and then I got a call. My parents apparently thought it would be a good idea to send my baby cousin up to Georgia to see me. And when I got home. There she was on my door step. I'm sorry Sarah. I never meant to neglect you or forget about you."
He leans in cupping my face. "Park the truck back in the drive way Sarah." I huff. "You didn't even bother to call Jacob." He huffs as well letting his head hang low. "I'm sorry Serah...." I shake my head. "Why don't you tell me the really reason you didn't reach out to me." He lifts his face to look at me. "Selena is old enough that she might....um..." I scuff. "Oh so now your worried...I get it." My tears start to build up. "Sarah it's not like that...." I chuckle pulling my door shut. "Isn't it though Jacob? I told you....Someone like me doesn't end up with someone like you." He shakes his head. "Sarah...." I let my tears fall looking him in his face. "I quit Jacob...." I put the truck in drive and pull away.
I see him run his fingers through his hair in my rear view. I pull back into the driveway putting the truck in park. Dylan peeks out the window coming to open the front door. He stands there waiting on me to retreat from the truck. I dry my tears pulling myself from the driver seat. I hand Dylan the keys. "Sarah...." I shake my head pushing past him heading up to my room. I hear his soft footsteps as I sob softly into my pillow. I hear him sigh and then step away as if he just couldn't find the right words to say.

Three Days Later
I hear a slight knock on my door. "Sarah you've got to come out at some point. You need to eat." I huff opening my door. "I'm not hungry." He looks down at me. "Fine then come help me with breakfast like you used to. For me?" I roll my eyes. "Fine." He smiles widely. "Thank you." I follow him down the stairs to the kitchen. "What are we having?" He hums. "I thought we could do pancakes. I know they are your favorite." I nod softly because as much as I didn't want to admit it, I was starving.
I used to sneak down in the middle of the night when Dylan was asleep and sneak food but scraps weren't enough. He grabs the ingredients from the fridge. "Here let's start with the flour." He pulls the bag open and it shoots up onto his face. I laugh softly. "So this is funny to you?" I nod softly and he throws some flour in my face. Before I know it both of us and the kitchen is covered in flour.
I'm laughing so hard that I barely hear the slight knock on the front door. Dylan wipes his face tossing the towel at me before heading to get the door. I am dusting myself off when I start to pay attention to his slight murmurs. "What on earth?" I peak around the kitchen corner. He shuts the door turning to snicker at me. "What is it?" He looks at me furrowing his brow. "Someone left a bucket of eggs on our porch. I don't know if that's the same as a pie to these people or...." I retreat swiftly back into the kitchen. "No there from Jacob...."
Dylan scuffs. "Come on now Sarah not everything is about Jacob." I turn softly to him. "I bet that pale has a red paint stain on it." He looks at the pale and then at me. "It's the same pale that he used to collected eggs for our breakfast one morning." He scratches the back of his head. "Sarah you want to tell me what's going on here?" I take a big breath. "He knows Dylan....and I guess he's too afraid for people to find out that he ditched me...." I turn with tears rolling down my face. "That's the truth Dylan. And the sad part is.....I kinda believed for a moment that maybe just maybe I could be normal again. That maybe a girl like me could be with someone like him. And the truth is Dylan. I was wrong....."
I start to sob and he places the pale on the counter pulling me into a hug. "I just wanted to be happy Dylan....." I feel his jaw lock as he places his chin on the top of my head. I cry and I cry and he just holds me, only whispering an 'I'm sorry kiddo'. He knows nothing he can say could take the pain away though he wishes it would.
Enjoy!
