"Daddy help! This strap isn't strapping," Tess hollered from her room in a frustrated and panicked tone.
Win came running in and his breath hitched in his throat at the sight of how beautiful and grown up his daughter looked in her dress. "Wow, look at you, little bug. You are breathtaking," he said, a little wistfully.
Tess gave her dad a warm smile. "I'm not a little bug anymore, daddy. I'm 17 already," she said sweetly, knowing she could be fifty and her daddy would still call her little bug.
Win leaned in and gave her a brief kiss on the forehead. "You'll always be my little bug, no matter how old you get," he said, reaffirming her inner monologues. His eyes took in how beautiful she had grown, but his heart would always remember the little girl she had always been to him.
"Daddy, the strap," Tess reminded him, while pointing out the offending material that wouldn't cooperate.
Win smiled and reached out for Tess' strap. He worked at the material to get it to even out and lay right. "See, it's all good now. There was nothing to be so worried about," Win said patiently before taking a step back to see how she looked for the New Year's Eve party.
Tess rolled her eyes at her dad while he fluttered his hands around to make sure her dress was laying correctly and tucked loose tendrils of her hair behind her ears. It was one of the benefits of having a daddy who had been in the entertainment industry for so long was that he was as meticulous about appearance as she was. Win fluttered around to make sure her outfit was in the proper place and they giggled over the watery eyes he couldn't help as he looked at his teenage daughter. Win smiled. "Are you ready?" he asked.
Tess laughed. "I'm nervous," she answered her father as she realized her friend she had grown up with since she was a kid was now her boyfriend, and this was their first date. In all reality, it was really Tess' first official date ever. She had 'dated' at school where the term basically just meant hanging out together at school but never doing anything after school. This would be her first official date with a boyfriend outside of school, even if her papa had only grudgingly allowed it after several arguments from her, her daddy, and her nana, and he had only finally agreed because it was a party that both her parents and her boyfriend's parents would be at as well.
Win laughed. "How can you be nervous? It's just Mick. You two have been friends since you were eight," he pointed out, trying to ease her tension by reminding her that Mick had been her friend since they were children.
Tess looked at her daddy. "Yes, we have always been friends, but we only just now figured out that we like like each other, daddy. I don't know how to act around him anymore, it's awkward, and I don't want Sarah to feel like she's left out if things go well, and if things don't go well, then it'll be weird between us and that'll make things weird with you and Papa and Uncle First and Uncle Khao," she mused. Soon after Win and Tess had permanently settled, Khao and First had adopted Mick, who was Tess' age at the time. Tess and Mick were only a couple months apart in age and because of how close their parents were, the two had grown up as consistent friends, along with Sarah, Joss' daughter.
