Chapter-11 ~ Detention and Betrayal

Yes, that's right. Donovan Desmond has been shot. He hurried quickly downstairs only to be halted by gunpoint by all of Desmond's security detail.

"What happened, I heard a gunshot. What happened??!!! Is my family safe? What about Mr. Desmond and his wife?"

One of the body guards lowered his gun, "Nice try, you western scum. You will soon be under arrest for suspected treason and attempted assassination."

Loid broke a sweat, "Wait what?? This must be a misunderstanding. What have I done?"

The bodyguard scoffed, "Don't pretend. There is no one else on this property who could do what you did. Besides, Mr. Desmond is not dead and is already on his way to the hospital. Your wife will be placed under investigation with you. We are not sure if she is also involved in this."

Even at a time like this, Twilight felt genuine concern and worry for his so called family, he wanted to make sure they were alright and ohh poor Anya must be so scared right now. He had to see them before any of this investigation started, he HAD TO.

Loid responded with his utmost eloquence, "Look, sir. I am a hard-working and well respected citizen of this country. I have a wife and a daughter. There is no chance in hell that I would attempt any sort of treason against this country which has given me the best life I could ever dream of. If there is an investigation, so be it."

"I don't know if you're a Westalian Spy or a retarded leftist. But the moment you go upstairs, Mr.Desmond gets shot from outside the window... There is no further explanation for this." - replied the bodyguard

If Loid resisted more, he knew he would be in more trouble. The best way for him to resolve this situation would be to pass the investigation conducted by the SSS. Resistance would only cause him harm and potentially his family.

"Alright. But where is my family?? Can I see them once before I am put under investigation by the SSS."

Loid knew that the bodyguard standing in front of him was not just a bodyguard, he was also a State Security official, it was common sense, really. No mere bodyguard has the jurisdictive power to put a citizen under investigation, nor are they fully aware of the country's laws and punishments.

He signalled the other guards to lower down their guns and frisk Loid.

"Your family insisted in going with the Desmonds to the hospital. And yes, if you are wondering that I am a State Security officer, you are right. I have dispatched 2 agents with the Desmonds. Upon my signal, your wife too will be brought under custody."

Twilight was now under cuffs. "But what of my daughter? Can you drop her off to my brother in law, Yuri Briar?"

Yes, Yor's brother, Yuri was also an SSS officer. Maybe invoking his name would do him a benefit since he knew Yuri's true profession.

The officer was perplexed,"Oh... Yuri Briar?"

"Yes... he is my wife's brother. Do you know him?" , Twilight replied.

He was hoping it would work, and it seemed to be working but Twulight couldn't get all his hopes high.

The officer smirked, "Well, yes. Just an old schoolmate."

Crap. Twilight was indeed going to be put under investigation. Oh boy was this going to be a ride for him. However, he didn't worry much about himself as he had been trained for such scenarios before. It was the thought of  Yor being investigated, that worried him.

Twilight was now feeling anxious and nervous, "Crap... what if Yor's secret gets exposed. I could get into trouble too and Operation-Strix would be over. I don't know much about this side of Yor, but I do really hope she doesn't loose her edge and tell them about why we got married. I don't think she will be investigated though, because Yuri is in the SSS. But if she tells Yuri anything real about our marriage, it's all over. "

Twilight was detained and dispatched off to an SSS precinct. He was detained in an investigation room and not a cell they used for criminals, yet.

They were obviously not going to send Yuri to interrogate Loid, because it would be a risk to Yuri's identity.

The door of the room opened.....

The man who opened was short and bald. But his shirt was bedecked with numerous ribbons and medals and he was smoking a big cigar. This had to be a senior official, it was no rookie they sent to interrogate Loid. After all, this was a very major case.

"Good evening, Forger. You already know why you are here. Let's get this started."

Loid responded with a soft, yet confident voice, "Good evening, officer. I am ready to answer any questions you have."

The officer stayed silent for about 1 minutes, carefully staring at Loid's facial expressions, which remained eerily constant and calm.

"My name is William Stein and I am the Assistant Director of the State Security Service. Where were you when Mr. Desmond was reportedly shot?"

Loid was actually nervous now.....

"I was upstairs in the bathroom."

Stein looked at him sternly, "You are aware that the bathroom's window leads directly to the courtyard from where Mr. Desmond was shot."

Loid replied, "I was indeed not aware of this."

"Well, then Loid. Let me make you aware of one more fact, the point from where Desmond was shot is the exact blind spot of the CCTV cameras placed outside. Is it really a coincidence that you were inside the bathroom when Mr.Desmond was shot?" - asked Stein

"Sir... I am being completely honest. I do not know what happened or how it happened. I am an honest 9 to 5 commoner who works hard for his wife and daughter, speaking of whom I don't even know the current condition of. And, yes, to answer your question, it was a complete coincidence."

Stein put down his cigar, "Alright, Forger. But, how can you explain this...?"

He handed him a photograph from the CCTV footage.

"This photo clearly shows a man wearing the same attire you wore that evening roaming outside the dining hall."

Loid looked at the photo... he knew it. Someone was trying to frame him. It was at this moment he remembered that Yor had mentioned that a traitor was the one who informed her about his file procurement mission. Someone was trying to set up Twilight himself, and that someone is clearly a WISE agent.

"Sir... that is not me. If it was truly me who was seen roaming outside in the courtyard... then how come was I held at gunpoint after I descended down the stairs to the inner hall of the mansion? That can not be possible sir, someone is trying to frame me."

Stein picked up his cigar again, "You are right Forger.... Thank you for your cooperation. Your wife and daughter are waiting outside."

Loid smiled, "Thank you, Assistant Director. I was informed that my wife was also going to be investigated. Do we have to wait for that.. or may we proceed home?"

"No need for that Forger. You may go home with your family. We are sorry for this trouble. You live an honest life and citizens like you are the people who make the difference in this country. Stand proud, Forger. Oh and, tell the man at the reception to give you a box of ferrero rochers, my orders."

"Oh sir, don't worry. There is no need for this." - Loid replied.

"Take it, Forger. It's a token of our apology and appreciation."

He decided not to argue further and accepted the gift, "Thank you."

And no, Twilight wasn't in relief, his real stress just began. The thought of a traitor in the organisation was more dangerous than an upturn with the SSS. He needed to be more careful now, but the sight of Yor and Anya waiting for him keenly at the bench made him feel a little bit of calm, as he was now sure that they were okay.
