Chapter-24 ~ The Trial

The director was an edgy person, about 6 foot 2. There was nothing about him which seemed out of the ordinary except his menacing aura. He wore a fedora and a long brown coat. His face was that of an ordinary man in his 50s, but he had a well-shaped black beard.

He removed his coat and gave it to Yuri. "Twilight, there won't be any investigation or interrogation, that would be a pointless waste of resources and time. You and I both know that. Well then.... I am here to inform you that your trial begins in 45 minutes. Should you be convicted, you would face a death sentence within 48 hours. Good luck."

Twilight didn't respond. He kept in staring at the man. The director turned his back on Twilight and whispered something to Yuri and the assistant director.

Twilight suddenly interrupted, "I don't get one thing..... why did you, sir, remove your coat?"

The director turned back to him, "I'm quite impressed by your observation skills, Twilight. And the answer to that question, I was about to give it to you later.... But I guess I'll just give it now."

He moved closer to Twilight and punched him in the guts.

"There's your answer. I'll get going now.", he said.

Meanwhile.... at the Forger Residence.....

"Mama! Why are you so late today?", spranged Anya as soon as Yor opened the door and entered the house.

She didn't reply to Anya and just walked into the house and headed to her room. She stood in front of her room's door. "Listen, Anya... Mama is not feeling well.... and as for Papa.... he won't be coming home tonight due to his business trip."

Anya suddenly started to cry.... she read Yor's mind and got to know the actual truth. A child loosing her father and that though because of her own mother.....

"Anya-san... why are you crying? Please don't cry...", spoke Yor in a tone that she herself was almost about to tear up.

"Papa is gone isn't he.....? In the morning he kissed me on the head and made me promise to take care of you and me... WHERE IS MY PAPA!!!", she shouted.

Yor didn't know what to say... she was in tears now and broke down on the floor. She only then started to realise what she had done... not only had she betrayed the man who loved her but also taken away the father of a child.

*If I tell Anya the truth.... I don't know how she would react... I don't even know how I myself would react.... I myself just can't comprehend what I've done. I need to fix it...*, she thought.

"Anya-san.... look... Mama has done something really bad... and I promise to fix it. As for papa, I promise you.... he will be okay and I will make sure that he is safe. Trust me.... Anya-san. I promise you that your father will be here safe and sound very soon. Just give me some time...." , she begged.

Anya was trembling and crying.. she couldn't even stand still anymore. Her eyes started to close... and soon she fell unconscious.

"Welcome to the court of Intelligence, Twilight.", the director said when he pushed Twilight onto the defendant's table area.

"Before we begin, Twilight. I'd like to inform you that trials here are swift and decisive. This will be the only hearing that takes place and based on this, your fate will be decided. There is no judge here, but the Ostanian Council of Intelligence will act as the jury and also the plaintiff.

Let the trial commence."

The spokesperson of the council, who was Yuri, started to speak, "Loid Forger, A.K.A Twilight... you have been charged with the following crimes:

- Assassination
- Attempted mass murder
- Infiltration
- Espionage
-  Destruction of Government Assets
- Attempt to escalate conflict

The overall punishments for these crimes is execution. Do you objectify?"

Twilight raised his head eye and looked into Yuri's eyes with determination. "Your honour, I objectify to statement-2. My target for yesterday was only Donovan Desmond, the leader of the National Unity Party. No other officials were harmed or were attempted to be harmed. I was hired by a member of the National Unity Party to carry out this task, it was not a doing of my agency. In fact, WISE only tried to prevent it. The other woman besides the anonymous security official hired by the cabinet was the negotiator. That woman was no negotiator, but a WISE agent who had been sent to stop me from carrying out the assassination."

The director stood up from his seat and spoke, "Well, Twilight.... why the hell would Desmond's Party do this? The National Unity Party is especially known for their loyal members. "

"The answer is simple, sir. It is politics and control 101.... to escalate conflict, cause war and obvious seize power from the leftist majority and impose harsher constraints on the people in return for the promise of security. Conflict is an opportunity, sir. Everyone in this room knows that.", he said.

Yuri clenched his fists and raised his voice, "Even if you were hired by the NUP to complete this job... you are still guilty of the crimes stated in the list, except for attempted mass murder, as per admitted by you, yourself."

After that, there was a silence in the room and the members of the council started whispering amongst themselves.

*As for regrets, I don't have any... I am ready to die. However, there is one thing that I do feel which I could've avoided.... stupidity. I was foolish to fall in love... well after all God does punish the stupid and in this case I have accepted my punishment for being stupid as death. It is only fair.... however, I am glad that my mission was a success. Somehow, I was able to convince the council and manipulate them as well for the false flag operation. I might have been wrong to trust Yor with the safety of this mission and my own personal trust and well-being. But if there's one thing that I still trust her with, it's Anya. I am sure she will take care of her... therefore I really don't have that much of regretting to do. God, I pray to you... just keep those 2 safe, no matter what.*

"Twilight, you have been sentenced to death. Your execution will be carried out within 24 hours through gunshot to the back of your head (In the late 1960s, East Germany actually used this as an execution method.).", spoke the director.
