first time he lets her in
"Is this your way of getting back at me?"
Suna flattens herself against the wall, aware she shouldn't be eavesdropping on Kaya and his mother but unable to help her curiosity.
"Kaya-"
"Taking meds again? Really, mom? God, did you even go to a doctor for these?"
"Of course I did."
Kaya laughs. "You're lying. You're actually lying to me. Wow. God, you're so selfish. Have you even considered what this will do to me?"
"This isn't about you!"
"Isn't it? Look me in the eye and tell me this isn't your way of punishing me for marrying Suna." He waits, but she doesn't say a word. "You can't, can you? Because you're doing this to hurt me."
Suna walks a bit closer, peeks in. Kaya is standing in the middle of the room, shoulders slumped and obviously heartbroken. "I was ten years old the first time I cleaned your puke off the floor. Twelve, the first time I had to drag your unconscious body from the bathroom floor to the bed. Fourteen, the first time you OD'd and I had to face the possibility that I was gonna be an orphan and all alone. You're willing to put me through all that again because, what? You don't like the woman I married?"
"You shouldn't have married her!"
"Why?!" He bellows, "give me one good reason."
"She's a pathetic girl who's using you for your money."
"Don't," he says quietly, advancing on her, "don't ever insult my wife again. As for using me, well, mother, I'm using her too. Guess we're even. Anything else?"
"She's not good for you."
He scoffs. "For the first time in all my life, someone actually cares about me. Not what I can do for them, but me. What are you even talking about?"
"She's going to destroy you," Nuket warns him, and Suna's chest tightens.
Kaya spreads his arms, a wide smile on his face. "Let her. If anyone's gonna destroy me, it might as well be her."
His words are still ringing in her ears hours later.
When he enters the room, Suna's nervous. She's spent so much time trying to find the right words to assure him that they're a team, that her need for revenge will never touch him; she won't let it. But still, she fears her words won't be enough.
He smiles at her when he comes in, but it's not his usual smile. They exchange hellos, and other than that, nothing. She clears her throat. "How are you? We haven't gotten to talk today."
He shrugs. "I'm fine. How has your day been?"
She looks up at him from her place on the bed, almost glaring up at him. "You're not fine, Kaya." She decides she's had enough when she notices his hands are shaking as he's holding his phone. Suna stands up, walks closer until they're standing face to face. "Talk to me."
He closes his eyes, looks away in a last ditch effort to hide from her. She puts her hands on both his cheeks and turns his head so he's facing her.
"I heard your talk with your mother."
He clenches his jaw, then lets out a quiet breath. "So, you know then." He sniffles, eyes wet with unshed tears.
"I do."
