"My Princess, perhaps you might be more comfortable waiting in your chambers?"

Katrina blinked heavily at the gentle suggestion of her friend, glancing up at Natasha as her lady-in-waiting sank down to sit beside where she was currently stationed, perched on a step halfway up the palace's great flight of stairs, her head resting against the cool marble of the bannister as she watched the distant doorway.

"I have already tried to do so." She confessed, knowing it was somewhat undignified to remain here, dressed for bed with her robe drawn about her as the hour grew late, but she could not bring herself to move. She needed to be here when he returned, to assure herself that he was safe.

From the moment they had arrived within the palace courtyard that afternoon in a frantic clatter of hooves upon stone, the Prince had begun calling out instructions. Orders for the palace guard to be doubled, for the grounds to be combed for signs of intruders, for the King to be informed, for every available man to prepare to patrol the kingdom - and for his own armour and sword to be brought.

There had been a fire in his eyes that she had never seen before. A spark of fury that manifested not in harsh words, but rolled off him in tangible waves. It was not anger directed at any of his own subjects, but clearly meant for those who had threatened the sanctuary of his home. The kingdom and people that he so loved.

The fire had calmed though, as she had laid her hands on his arm and begged him not to go. To stay with her, to let others investigate the intrusion. He had turned to gather her into his arms, not caring who saw as he held her close, soothing one hand over her hair that had been tangled by their gallop from the river. Gazing so earnestly into her eyes as he reminded her that he had sworn to protect her, and that he intended to do so now.

I will return to you, little doe.

He had whispered that promise to her before he had ridden away once more. Once Steven had returned to ride at his side and Natasha had been returned to Katrina. Once a number of guards had been assigned to shadow the Princess until her betrothed returned.
