Two weeks. Two weeks until they were to be wed.

There were few enough plans left to finalise, the list of guests had been confirmed, a wide range of people from all walks of life, from noblemen to the farmers who were to supply the banquet. It seemed the royals of this land were eager to open their home to all of their people, highborn or otherwise.

The Prince and Princess had been able to make it through a turn of the ballroom unscathed. It had taken several more hours of practice, but they could now predictably begin and end the waltz in each other's arms, with minimal verbal warfare in the space between.

In fact, though they had made no conscious choice regarding the matter, their attitudes towards one another had begun to soften. Not fully, but since the day Prince James had cradled her carefully against his chest and whispered of their combined faults with such sincerity and fondness, their words towards each other hadn't felt quite so sharp. The next day, though the Queen had made no appointment, he still called upon her in her chambers. With Natasha eyeing him warily from across the room, he had traipsed in from the barracks, his hair and clothing unkempt as if he had been sparring all morning.

Still, with perfect civility he had perched beside his Princess on the chaise she had propped her feet upon, offering her his lap as a footstool and laughing as he was offered a verbal warning of a swift kick in return.

He still delighted in vexing her, of course, but Kat had begun to notice that he rarely scowled now, when she entered a room.

She had also begun to notice her pulse beginning to flutter in those moments, but she could blame that on her body readying her for whatever quips they would begin to exchange the moment anyone else was out of earshot.

She couldn't quite use that excuse for the measure of disappointment she felt when she met with the Queen one afternoon to find him absent. His training of the squires at the barracks had dominated the last few days, with the Prince rarely having time to linger after their meetings. It seemed today it had commandeered his time entirely.
