It was a cold evening, even beneath his jacket, Bucky could feel the chill of the air working its way towards his skin. It was different to the cold he had been feeling in Europe recently, that dry, biting freeze. This was a wetter cold, damp and decidedly English.
Kat didn't seem to have noticed the temperature though, not since she had shivered stepping out of the bar they had ended their night in, and he had swiftly moved to drape his heavy wool coat over her shoulders. It was a shame to hide her pretty red dress and frock coat underneath that standard-issue khaki, but the smile she had cast him as he had done so was more than worth it.
"It's been a long time since you first walked me home." She hummed thoughtfully as they passed under the dim glow of a streetlight. Few enough of them were lit in the city, it made it easier to shut them off when a blackout was called for.
Smiling to himself at her quiet comment, Bucky tightened his hold on Kat's shoulders slightly. "You have no idea how often I think about that night, sweetheart."
"I might have some idea." She countered gently, her steps pausing as she looked up at him, one hand laying on his chest to still his own strides. "I think that night was one of the best things that ever happened to me, Buck."
Exhaling a soft breath at the bare, earnest emotion in her words, Bucky let himself look down into the pair of sparkling grey eyes gazing back up at him. He knew what he wanted to say, it had been on the tip of his tongue all night, every time he tugged her close on the dancefloor of the tiny pub after watching her laugh through a spin, every time he had caught her watching him as he had slipped up to the bar to fetch their drinks, seeing that unabashedly adoring look painted there. A look that was only for him.
