A strange new employee

Something was off about that new employee. Peter had gotten his transcript from the last location he worked at, and they did mention how he seemed a bit strange, but he hadn't expected this. His pupils were constantly blown so wide that it looked like he had smoked about 5 kilos of weed before coming to work, and that damn smile was freaking him out.

On top of that, everyone else also seemed so on edge around him, as if he was some wild animal who was going to rip their throats out if they let their guard down. Peter couldn't say he didn't get a similar feeling about him, but this was getting ridiculous. Even Dave was avoiding this guy, which he never did! He was usually tossing himself face first at anyone new they hired.

When Peter tried to talk to him about it, all he responded with was incoherent mumbling about how "old sport changed" or about being threatened, which wasn't helping him get any closer to figuring this out.

So, when Peter had worked up the courage, he asked "Jack" or whatever that creature had claimed his name was, into his office.

By the time he finally managed to convince him that he wasn't in trouble and that there wasn't anything bad happening it was already past 17:00. God, his confidence felt like it was practically evaporating the longer he had to be around that thing. He looked like a moldy Jack O'Lantern, with all the tiny pitch black spots all over what little skin he had exposed.

"Listen, employee, we need to talk" he started, hopeful that this maybe wouldn't go too badly "a lot of customers and even some of our other employees have reported feeling uncomfortable and uhh threatened by you." Peter really hoped that last part didn't sound too accusatory, although if it DID he honestly would have been pretty happy if it meant Dave were to disappear.

"Jack" didn't really seem the type to be too forgiving if he found out someone was talking behind his back and that could be exactly what Fazbenders needed to get rid of the pest that was that aubergine. Sure, maybe crucifixion didn't work, but "Jack" may just be able to scare Dave into not coming back, even if he doesn't die.

When Peter gained back the confidence he looked into the other man's eyes again, noticing that it had been almost 10 seconds without a response. When he looked at him his eyes seemed glazed over, but like there was still some kind of emotion there. It was hard to tell, considering he never stopped smiling.

Come to think of it, the phone headed man could not recall a single time where Jack wasn't smiling. Even when his body language or the rest of his face so clearly radiated discomfort and unease and general distress, the smile didn't falter for even a second.

Hell, for all Peter knows he might not be able to stop. "Employee?" He waved his hand in front of Jack's face. "Yes?" The other man responded, as if he had completely zoned out. "Did you hear any of what I just said?" Peter said somewhat sternly, but hopefully not too sternly.

"Yeah, I was scary or something? Look, phoney, I don't want any trouble. I think you know that just as well as I do" The words hung in the air for a while. It was uncomfortable, to say the least. But what was he supposed to respond with? The shorter man in front of him was terrifying, and Jack probably knew that.

The air felt so tense between them as the phone headed man just stared into those massive, glowing eyes. They looked so soulless, and yet familiar at the same time. This was all too strange for Peter, he needed to leave.

"Get out" he said, sounding so uneasy. Without a word Jack left through the door, although he almost seemed slightly shaken. Peter had found that interesting, even though that thing that just left his office was always so intimidating, he'd still get so anxious over nothing. Maybe that's why the smile never left his face, because he was too scared to let it.

That could be thought about later though, right now all Peter wanted was a drink.

Tomorrow is another day.
