__________________________The wind pushed against Elijah as he rode up the winding driveway on his bike. The engine growled beneath him as he slowed, pulling up to the house. The ice chill of the wind on his skin stilled as he came to a stop, his exposed arms resenting the lack of exposure he had in the tight black t-shirt. Elijah pulled his helmet off, running his hand through his hair before getting off the bike and heading inside.
Knowing the layout of his house like the back of his hand, and his family's routine, he headed straight for the dining room. The familiar chill of Waddesdon manor didn't leave Elijah as he walked through the house. The house was full of lit fireplaces, constantly being tended to, but that didn't stop the cold feeling he got whenever he was in the house. Yes, he had grown up there. But that's all it was. A house. Not a home. The closest thing he felt he had to a home was when he was with his sister and mother.
Knowing he was more underdressed than his mother would've liked for family dinner, he strolled into the warmly lit room.
"Elijah darling, where have you been?" Charlotte's voice rang from the other end of the room, she was sitting next to the head of the table.
"I took a detour. Had to fill up the tank." He walked across the room, past the fire that did nothing to warm his skin, and to his usual place, the other side of the head of the table.
Charlotte squinted as she looked into her son's eyes. As if she was trying to read his mind to unveil any secrets. "Your father is running a bit late, so I've asked the kitchen to hold back a few moments. Odette and Ana are on their way. Damien isn't joining us tonight."
"Why is he here, mother?" Elijah tried to hide his frustration. Charlotte saw straight through it.
Taking her time, the older woman took a sip for her wine, and gently placed it back on the table. "Do not start with this again, Elijah. Yes, he has made his mistakes, but he is still your brother. You two used—"
Elijah laughed in disbelief. "Mistake? You're fucking kidding me. You call getting arrested for—"
"'Lijah! You're home!" Elijah immediately stopped as Odette came running into the dining room. He immediately got up and scooped her into his arms with an over exaggerated groan. "I've missed you so much!"
"I've missed you like crazy, Oddy." He hugged his little sister in arms tightly. "God, you're still so tiny. What are they feeding you in this place?"
Odette squealed and wriggled in his arms as he tickled her stomach, his grip on her not slipping at all. He'd never let her fall.
Ana watched from the entrance of the dining room as Elijah greeted his sister, and she felt something warm grow in her heart. She blamed it on the fire blazing a couple metres away from her. "Ana, come and sit down. There's a place made up next to Elijah."
The two young adults met each other's gaze simultaneously, before breaking away just as swiftly. Elijah put Odette back down before she ran back round to her seat, next to his mother. He took his seat as Ana walked over and sat down, overly conscious of him being right next to her.
"So, how was the tour of the grounds?" Charlotte began, as the kitchen staff began bringing out plates of food, putting them in the centre of the table. Ana could feel her stomach ache at such a delicious sight. There was a range of food, most of it centering around a classic British roast dinner, something Ana had come to love from her time in England.
