Chapter 3
I walked down the stairs and my eyes instantly met with Noah's. He flashed me a smile and my aunt looked between both of us with a confused look on her face.
"Shannon, David, this is my niece Veronica." She gestured for me to come over and shake their hands, which I dutifully did.
"Nice to meet you." Shannon smiled with a limp handshake.
"Pleasure." David smiled but unlike his wife his handshake was firm.
"And this is Noah." My aunt said.
"We've met." Noah smirked at me. Ugh who does he think he is.
"Oh." My aunt chuckled nervously. "Well, now that we all know each other, lets eat.
We sat in the beautiful dining room, each of our plates filled with the first course, Selena hurried and got everything settled and made sure the food was okay, then she headed back to the kitchen. The plates had 2 forks on each side, some knives, and some spoons. I had no idea which one to use. I didn't want to look around to see what other people were doing, that would be embarrassing. I heard Noah chuckle beside me
"You use the right one." His hot breath whispered into my ear.
"Like I didn't know that?" I hissed back at him. He chuckled again softly and continued eating. The rest of the dinner was boring. There was a lot of questions, like if I liked it here. Did I miss my hometown. But no one seemed to ask the question why. Why was I here? I was grateful for that. Selena was clearing away the dishes when my aunt cleared her throat.
"Shannon, David, Why don't you come with me and we can have some drinks in the den."
"That sounds splendid." David rubbed his hands together.
"Veronica, you and Noah can go sit on the back porch it's a beautiful night."
I swallowed back the lump of anger in my throat. I did not want to be anywhere with this cocky, know-it-all. But I simply nodded and rose from my seat.
There was a nice breeze in the summer air. It smelt fresh and clean. The stars twinkled above, it almost made me feel free. Almost.
"So." Noah sat down beside me.
"So." I said flatly looking out at the night sky.
"Tell me about yourself." His eyes sparkled under the porch light.
"What do you want to know" I asked sounding bored.
"I dunno. Everything." He smiled flashing me his glowing, white, straight teeth.
I rolled my eyes. "Theres not much to tell." I picked at my cuticles.
He squinted at me like he was trying to figure something out.
"What?" I asked feeling exposed.
"Nothing your just different." He tilted his head to the side looking much like a little kid.
I scoffed. "Whatever."
"No, I didn't mean it in a bad way, you're just not like most girls from this town."
"Well, how do girls in this town act."
"I dunno." He shrugged.
This time I was the one to tilt my head to the side like a little kid. He laughed and I couldn't help but grin.
"You have pretty eyes." He said soflty.
I felt tears prickle behind my eyes. I thought instantly of my father. My breathing picked up. My father always said I had pretty eyes. Then it hit me. Was I really letting myself be flirted with by this cocky jerk.
"Thanks." I said coldly, turning away from him.
"Did I do something wrong." He asked.
"No. I'm just not interested in flirting with you."
"You think I was flirting with you?" He laughed. "It was just a compliment."
"Well I don't need you to compliment me."
"Okay, okay" He held up his hands. "I'm sorry."
I sat there not saying anything.
"Let me make it up to you." He smiled.
"Um no." I shook my head.
"Um yes," He laughed. "I'll be at your house tomorrow at 8:30. Be ready."
He got up "Um don't count on it." I said.
He opened his mouth to answer but he was cut off by the opening of the door. His parents emerged.
"Let's go Noah." His mother said sweetly.
He looked back at me. "8.30" He smiled, then he was gone.
My aunt came over to me. "8:30 what?" she asked once everyone said goodbye.
"Who knows." I shrugged.
"Goodnight." I kissed my aunt on the cheek.
"Good night." She answered looking confused.
I layed down and closed my eyes, resting into the soft sheets of my bed. I fell asleep with a smile on my face. I was actually a little excited about 8:30.
