Chapter 9
I walked in the door and I was immediately face to face with my aunt.
"So now I guess I get one of those teenage talks about calling before I don't show up at home." I chuckled trying to lighten the mood, the look on her face ruined my hope.
"I know you're going through a hard time." She said. "And that you have never had freedom before, but Veronica this is unacceptable. I almost called the cops to report a missing teen."
"I'm so sorry Liz, I wasn't even thinking." I said.
"It's okay, as soon as I saw you get out of Noah's car I knew you were safe." She sighed and her eyes softened.
I smiled.
"Just tell me Veronica did anything happen over there?" She asked seriously.
My smile disappeared. "Are you seriously asking me that?" I said.
"Veronica I just need to know." She said calmly.
I scoffed. "No, nothing happened. We fell asleep watching movies that's it." I lied.
"Okay I believe you." She said.
"Thank you." I sighed in relief. I felt really guilty about lying. No nothing did happen, but what would she do if she found out I had gotten drunk. I cleared the thoughts away.
Liz kindly smiled at me. "Come with me." She said. I followed her into the kitchen, she reached into the cabinet and pulled out a bottle of Tylenol. She handed me too without saying anything. She just looked up at me and gave me a sad smile. I looked down at the pills it felt like they weighed a ton, I took them and quickly dry swallowed. I stood there for a moment not sure of what to do. I decided I should talk to her about it.
"Liz?" I asked knocking on the door to the study.
"Yes, Veronica?" She asked softly.
I walked in and took a seat on the couch. I swallowed trying to think of the right thing to say.
"Um, why did you give me the Tylenol?" I asked.
"Seriously Veronica? You have the nerve to ask me that?" She said.
I lowered my eyes.
"I can tell, your very hungover, and you smell like a sewer. Did you really think I was going to let you get away with this?" She asked.
"Liz, I can explain." I said.
"There's nothing to explain. Now I don't want to be the bad guy, but this behavior is unacceptable." She came and sat down next to me.
"I know, I'm so sorry."
"What came over you?" She said.
"What do you mean?" I asked, afraid of the answer.
"I mean what pressured you to drink. I knew you weren't ready for a party!" She raised her voice a little.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked a little too cruelly, but come on I wasn't ready for a party, like there's something wrong with me that I can't hang out with friends.
"It means maybe your just not ready, maybe you need some more time to adjust." Her voice raised again.
"Liz, I'm not some little kid with a problem, I can go out with friends without breaking down!" I said.
"Are you sure Veronica because this is just a lot to deal with, I don't know how to handle an out of control teen."
"Are you kidding?!" I snapped. "An out of control teen, Liz this was the first time I went out with friends since my 9th birthday party at some cheap bowling alley while my father was drunk the whole time! I have been kept in a house for years!" I shouted.
