She'd lived a hard life surprisingly well, often having more pennies than dimes. But generational habits created more memories than most could in a hundred lifetimes. All the jokes had been told. All the songs had been sung. She'd taken more than her fair share. She lay in a clinical hospice bed, all five of her children there. They too would carry the burden, her one and only regret. But it comforted her knowing they would experience a joy only the least could get.
Her eyes slid closed, a garbling breath, no more pain, addiction, or need. And when they reopened, she was innocent once more, a baby wailing for her mother's first feed.
