The silence woke me. It was never quiet in the underworld. The screams of the lost Souls always echoed through its dark labyrinth of corridors.
But now... all was silent.
Being a Soul Reaper does something to you. You become numbed, without conscience. Nothing can phase you. Some of the older Reapers had even told me they'd forgotten what it was like to be afraid. I thought I'd forgotten too.
Until the silence.
It was deafening. I was certain that if I'd had a soul, it would've trembled.
