Chapter Nine Day

"I had a lot of fun." June says, leaning against her door. The hallway lights leading to her apartment flicker. We barely escaped the storm. Thunder booms, shaking the building. I jump. She lets out a laugh.

"We're lucky, yeah?" I ask.

"I missed you." She blurts out. I look into her eyes and can tell she meant every word.

"I missed you too."

We sit in an awkward silence.

A grin tugs at my lips. "Are you going to kiss me or not?" I ask.

"Patience is a virtue." She smirks, and shuts the door.

My jaw goes slack, but then turns into an ear to ear smile. The flirtatious little bastard.

I shove my hands in my pockets and step out onto the damp street. Rain has been pretty common right now, and from what I've heard, the government is pretty nervous that we are going to have a flooding aftershock. I genuinely doubt it though. If Anden was concerned, he probably would have stayed with June to force his woes upon.

What if your just a rebound from the Anden/June scenario? My mind pesters. No. I shake my head to clear the thought. If anything, Anden was the rebound. He just happened to be there when I wasn't.

He just happened to be there when I wasn't.

Suddenly a flood of thoughts take over my brain. June and Anden had been together for 10 years. That was 10 years I had abandoned her. And 10 years is quite a commitment. Dates, kisses, they had probably slept together...

I kick a rock as hard as I can, a sudden pulse of anger sweeping through my body like an uncontrolled forest fire. It ricochets off of a metal trash can, sending a skinny orange tabby with little tufts of fur hissing away from me. Half of a rotten fish is dangling from its mouth, and I can't help but think that is I were still on the streets, that probably would have been my meal. How much things have changed.

Before I know it I'm at my apartment building, walking up the stairs to my place. I never liked elevators. It was a confined feeling I was more than willing to ignore. Plus the workout couldn't exactly hurt.

I hear heavy bass pounding outside my door, colorful lights flashing from under the frame. I don't even bother to knock.

I am immediately enveloped in a mass of dancing bodies, red solo cups up in the air, some clear liquid sloshing out of them. Some very drunk girls crowd around me, bright red lipstick flashing in my face.

"So your the famous Day Wing?" A platinum blonde one in a crop top and cut off shorts purrs.

"Where is Eden." I growl.

"Feisty." She puts a hand on my chest, long painted nails drawing circles.

"I don't have the patience for this." I say, shoving her off of me. She just gives a flirtatious smirk and dances off to find desperate prey of the male gender.

I walk into the kitchen, eyes peeled for a short blonde head, and find nothing. The living room and bathroom are just as empty, although in a bathroom I see a couple making out. I roll my eyes and continue the search.

The last place I check is Eden's room, and sure enough there he is, sleeping in a pool of his own vomit.

"You little goddy trot." I sigh. He reeks of booze.

Walking back out of the room, I turn on the lights switch off the music and yell "Party's over! Those of you sober enough to drive get the hell out, and those drunk enough to not understand what I'm saying stay here." The sea of people slowly disperse, over half of them staying. A strawberry blonde head comes out of the crowd.

"Daniel!" She slurs.

"Tess, I'm really not in the mood to deal with you right now."

"But Danny-" she trips on her way over to me.

"Go get in Eden's bed. I'll be there in a minute."

"Do you know how long-" she hiccups. "I've been waiting for Eden to say that?"

I point toward his door. "Go."

I now take in the situation. Seventeen people total left in my apartment, five of which are passed out on the floor, one oblivious couple making out on the couch, a confused group are still dancing, and the rest stare at me blankly.

I grab my phone. Within a few rings she picks up. "Hello?"

"June, hate to ruin your night, but Eden threw a rager and I have 17 drunks that need to be taken home."

"On my way right now."

At two am everyone is gone, except for the two drunks snoring loudly from Eden's room, one very angry older brother, and one very beautiful girl.

"I really can't picture Eden throwing a better party than me." She shakes her head. I laugh.

"This isn't the first, but it will definitely be the last."

"I though he was better than this."

"He's going through his rebellious stage." I shrug.

"I can't believe you raised him." She looks at me with sad eyes.

I shake my head. "Not very well."

"Don't beat yourself up Day. It's not your fault."

"I shouldn't have left him home alone."

"He's 16. He has to grow up at some point."

"I expect more out of Tess too."

"Do you think they had sex?"

This throws my off guard. "Do you?"

"I don't know..."

"No. No. She.... No."

"Daniel...."

"He's 16!"

"Daniel...."

I sit on the couch with my head in my hands. She laughs. "What's so funny!"

"You were 17."

"So! That's one whole year older!"

She kisses my cheek. My heart rate quickens tenfold. "Karma's a bitch." I sigh.

"Do you think it was protected?"

"They were drunk."

"Gaaaaaaaaaah."

We sit in silence, my head still in my hands, shaking back and forth, her hand rubbing my back. "I should get home." She whispers after awhile.

"No. It's late. You can sleep in my bed, I'll take the couch."

"Day..."

"June."

"Okay." She surrenders.

"Sleep well."

She gets up to go. I turn my head toward the window. Suddenly, out of the blue, her lips are pressed against mine. I feel my eyes grow wide, but then they close, sinking into the warmth of June's touch. It was only for a moment, because then her lips reluctantly leave mine, making me immediately miss their warmth.

"That was nice." I whisper.

"Yeah." She breathes.

"You should probably go to bed."

"Yeah."
