Puss sat on the porch swing of their little house, looking into space in deep thought. Maria came out to him and tapped him on the shoulder. She was becoming a strong and gorgeous young woman, and Puss couldn't have been more proud.
"Mama wanted me to tell you that dinner's ready," she told him. Puss smiled.
"Who could resist your mother's carne asada?" he laughed, standing up. He walked into the house and smelled the rich aroma of the cooked meat immediately. He walked over to the table and planted a kiss on Kitty's forehead.
"I thank the Lord for your cooking," Puss whispered. Kitty smiled back. Then, she gasped, looking down at her pregnant stomach.
"I think I just felt a kick," Kitty said. "When do you figure I'll be due?"
"Don't look at me!" Puss said, holding his hands up. "I'm not a doctor!"
Kitty laughed as she dished out the steaming food. "May I be excused?" Maria asked her.
"My goodness, pequena, you never eat anything!" Kitty said. "Very well; you can go."
"Thank you!" Maria said, running out the door.
"Don't go too far away from the house!" Kitty called after her.
Maria ran through the long grass until she got to a small hill. She picked up Puss' sword. "Right where I left you," she said, holding the blade to the sunlight so it took on a glow.
Then, she stared into the fields as she practiced what her father had taught her, thrusting and parrying the weapon.
As she swung it, she studied the beauty of the sword's craftsmanship, and then looked to the hills in the distance as the light shined miraculously on all of God's creation.
She was looking into her future.
