“Your Highness,” the guard called from behind the door. “His Majesty has called for you,” he relied the message without checking if the prince, Sunghoon, was even in the room. “Your Highness?” He called again when there was no answer, finally deciding to barge into the room in case something had happened. His anxiety immediately lowered when he saw Sunghoon standing in front of his mirror, staring at himself blankly in his wedding dress. The dress was quite an impressive piece, delicate and luxurious with long sleeves and an open neck. A dress fitting of a future queen. Sunghoon could not view it as anything other than fatal.
“I’m getting married,” Sunghoon mumbled, sounding distant.
“His Majesty is waiting, your highness—”
“Jaeyun, it’s just us,” Sunghoon interrupted him.
The guard sighed, “Sunghoon, we really need to go,” he insisted.
“Jaeyun…” Sunghoon turned towards him, eyes gleaming with tears he was fighting back. Jaeyun knew those weren’t tears of joy. “I’m getting married…”
“You are,” Jaeyun nodded along.
“I don’t know him,” Sunghoon said, breath held in to try and stay composed. “I’m getting married and I don’t know him,” his lip trembled, hands fisting the fabric of his dress. “I’m getting married and I won’t- I’ll have to- and I haven’t even met him before,” Sunghoon choked on his words, one single tear slid down his cheek.
“Come on Hoon, don’t cry,” Jaeyun comforted him, how he wished he could hug him like he used to when they were kids. He wished he could hug him like before they presented as alpha and omega, and no longer could play together. More than anything, he wished his friend could stop suffering. “Sunoo will have to fix your makeup,” he attempts to joke, if only to fool himself as well; to pretend he wasn’t as sad and affected as Sunghoon. One of them had to be strong, and Sunghoon had the hardest job out of the two.
“I’m getting married… and I won’t see Sunoo again,” Sunghoon’s voice cracked and he almost broke down. “I won’t see you again,” that finally made it, Sunghoon fell on his knees and let himself cry for every piece of himself he’d be losing.
Sunghoon thought he was ready, that he’d accepted his destiny; he was wrong. From a very young age, Sunghoon had known he’d one day be married off to some other kingdom and he would have no say in it. It was once he presented as an omega that this idea fully sank in his mind, and he began the long process of accepting he was nothing more than a commodity for his kingdom, a means for political alliances. And for his husband, he’d be nothing more than a stress-reliever and heir-producer. He didn’t like it, if he were honest, he hated it. He cried many nights for his future, but eventually came to terms with it. He had thought he had grown used to the idea and accepted his fate.
Now that the day had actually arrived, he realised how wrong he’d been. His parents had given him less than two days to get used to the idea that his marriage was really coming through, and he had to collect himself in just a night of crying. Sunoo had been there for him all night and Jaeyun had stood outside his room. Now he wasn’t going to see them ever again. He simply wasn’t ready.
“If I could, I’d stop all of this…” Jaeyun whispered just in case there was someone listening. “But I don’t think starting a war is what you want,” he continued his attempts at distracting Sunghoon.
It was enough to help Sunghoon compose himself; enough to block his anxiety behind a wall deep in his mind until he could let it out. “Thanks, Jaeyun,” Sunghoon wiped his tears. “I don’t know what I’d do without you…” he almost started crying again. He’d have to figure that out soon.
