It all clicked into place a couple of days later, when Sunghoon was woken up by Sunoo. The most embarrassing part of it all, Sunghoon took way longer than he should have to realise something was out of the ordinary. In his defence, he’d just woken up and his brain needed a minute or five to piece everything together. For the first couple of minutes, he went through the motions of his early routine like always, noting that something was off but not being able to tell what.
Then he did a double take of Sunoo.
“What are you doing here?” His question came out rude, but he was honestly just surprised. More than surprised, really. Sunoo was well aware that Sunghoon could be dumb sometimes, so he started laughing.
“That’s one way to greet me, I guess,” Sunoo chuckled out. “You had me believing you knew I’d be here,” he continued once he’d calmed down a little.
“I’m so confused,” Sunghoon muttered. “I mean— I’m happy that you are here, but—”
“I get it, and I’m not the only one,” Sunoo told him cheerfully. He then walked to the door and had his guard step in.
Except his guard wasn’t Jongseong or Riki, it was Jaeyun.
Sunghoon stared at them for ten full seconds, eyes opened wide and mouth ajar from shock. He thought he would cry. He immediately hugged them as tightly as he could before letting go and addressing more of his concerns.
“I— How? When?” He questioned. He was extremely happy, he never thought he’d see them again, but he was also so incredibly lost he couldn’t enjoy the moment. “Why?”
“Honestly? I don’t know,” Sunoo answered quickly.
“I was told his majesty called for me and I would have to be your guard here,” Jaeyun shrugged. “I didn’t question them, if I’m honest.”
“Right, I wasn’t even working at the palace anymore,” Sunoo commented. It made sense, though, without Sunghoon there, Sunoo didn’t really have anything to do. Jaeyun could continue to be a guard at some other position.
“Heeseung asked for you?” Sunghoon wanted to get an idea of why, a reason Heeseung may have to call for them now. “When did you arrive?”
“Way too early,” Sunoo complained. “We left late last night, apparently it was urgent,” Sunoo rolled his eyes. “But…” Sunoo looked like he always did when looking for gossip. “You are calling his majesty by name? Did things go well in the end?” He raised his eyebrows as he smiled. Sunghoon wanted to hide.
“Oh, I hadn’t noticed,” Jaeyun commented, but seemed just as curious as Sunoo.
“It’s not what you think,” Sunghoon hid behind his hands. “He just prefers to be called Heeseung…”
“So you mean to tell me I could call him by his name?” Sunoo tried to tease him, but Sunghoon nodded. Everyone called Heeseung by his name, as far as he was aware.
“Wait, seriously?” Jaeyun was shocked.
“Yes,” Sunghoon stayed firmed in his answer. “But…”
“But?” Sunoo pressed for details.
“But I… may… possibly… like him… a little bit…” he trailed off, burying his face further into his hands as Sunoo let out a loud squeal. Jaeyun gasped at the same time.
“This is great!” Sunoo proclaimed. “You like your husband; this is the ideal situation!”
“You don’t seem happy,” Jaeyun noted. He was visibly worried about being in the room with them for too long, he didn’t want to get in trouble on his first day and he didn’t want Sunghoon to be in trouble either.
