The Office

Tighnari and Cyno walked to the Principal's office in silence. They could hear Ms. Clorine's heels behind them.

Crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap. Why did Ms. Clorinde have to see us like that!? Cyno was just messing around and then that happened! What did she think we were doing!? We're high school boys, we're idiots. Stuff like that is bound to happen!!! Tighnari's mind was racing.

He was too deep in thought that he almost missed the turn to the front office. They arrived at the Principal's office and sat down. Tighnari hung his head low, and didn't dare look anyone in the eye.

Mr. Zhongli took a sip from his tea and sighed.

"Tell me," He looked at Cyno and Tighnari. "What are you two in here for?"

Tighnari looked at Cyno from the corner of his eye, begging him to speak. Cyno sighed. It was too awkward for them to explain how they ended up in that embarrassing position. Cyno took a deep breath and spoke up first.

"I was being a goof ball and grabbed Tighnari's backpack. He asked me to let him go but I didn't, and then..." His voice trailed off, heat rising in his face.

"Tighnari?" Mr. Zhongli turned his attention to Tighnari. "Can you finish the rest of the story?"

Tighnari started shaking a little, but he nodded. His ears folded back, and he continued the story.

"I turned around to punch Cyno but we lost balance and he fell on top of me. Ms. Clorinde walked out of the chemistry classroom and found us in that weird position." Tighnari fidgeted with the drawstrings on his sweatshirt.

Tighnari looked at the clock as the bell rang for release.

How much longer do I have to be here? I need to be with Collei and walk home with her.

Mr. Zhongli took a long moment to process this information.

"I see," Mr. Zhongli said calmly. "Well, in that case, you have no reason to be here."

Tighnari and Cyno looked at him in confusion.

"What?" Cyno said.

"What do you mean? We missed our last class for nothing?" Tighnari was just as baffled as Cyno.

"I wasted time walking as slow as possible to find the best way to put the situation only for you to tell us we did nothing wrong?" Cyno scratched his head.

Mr. Zhongli nodded. He smiled and took another sip of his tea.

"You boys are free to go, and don't worry about Ms. Clorinde being angry. I'll explain everything to her."

Cyno and Tighnari looked at each other, then at Mr. Zhongli. Cyno was the first one to leave the office, but Tighnari stayed back.

"Is something on your mind, Tighnari?"

He nodded.

"What is it?" Mr. Zhongli's face softened."

"Is my little sister Collei okay? Is she doing well? She hasn't come here and complained about bullying, has she?" Tighnari sounded a little panicked, and holding his breath.

Mr. Zhongli shook his head and laughed. "Don't worry about your sister, she's perfectly fine. She's excelling in her classes and going above and beyond fantastic. I'm proud of her."

Tighnari's posture relaxed as he stopped holding his breath.

"Go home Tighnari, and enjoy your weekend."

Tighnari left the office and searched the school's front yard for Collei. He found her sitting by the fountain reading a book.

"Hi Collei." He smiled warmly at her.

"Hi Tighnari."

"Ready to go home?" He offered his hand to her.

She took his hand and stood up. "More than ready."

They walked home, chatting and laughing.  Tighnari almost tripped and fell over when he remembered seeing the other half of Cyno's face. His cheeks reddened slightly.

"Tighnari, is something wrong?" Collei asked.

"No. I'm fine. Let's go home." He took Collei's hand in his, and enjoyed the Friday evening.
