Chapter 10—The End
Gleeful to see my lover again after months of never seeing him, he carried me away from the deserted tripod and onto the road, where he would explain to me the whole situation occurring in the world based on reports. Apparently, he said that the Martians landed on every part of the world, something I might have already known, but then he went on to say that their invasions had come to a sudden halt and, for that, began to lose. Their invisible shield that had once protected their advanced machines had disappeared for an unknown reason, paving the way for all armies and organizations to strike back at them.
He then has a theory for all of this. The sickness we had seen affecting the two Martians was not because of usual circumstances; it was because of the common bacteria floating in our atmosphere. Something that we had become immune to thanks to our mindless ancestors thriving in this world thousands of years ago. Another noticeable factor in our comeback is the death of the red weed, which has been turning gray and eventually rotting away into small particles of dust. The effects of the red weed were devastating, just like the invasion itself, but they're also losing to the natural environment of our world.
As the sun began rising again and the bright blue sky returned, hope was growing inside me further since it had sparked the moment I saw my lover's face. I began sensing a mix of emotions within me, even wanting to release a tear in my eyes, but I kept it in. We ended up in a ruined city with no traces of bodies or bright red branches growing everywhere; only refugees and military forces wandered around, instructing all of us to move inside underground structures to house them. Strangely, many tripods were present in the area, standing still as if they were just statues, but they were actually still breathing. Some eventually collapsed for no reason, but thanks to the knowledge I received from my lover, their sickness may have already overtaken the drivers inside, leaving rotting corpses lying on their seats.
Despite the evidence of the Martian invasion collapsing, the military command in the area was unaware of the news. I asked my lover about this, and he too was curious about it, so he went up to one of the military officers shouting at refugees and said, "Staff Sargegent, have you taken notice of the tripods?"
"Yeah? Is she hurt?" He said this in response, noticing me.
"No, she's fine, but there has been news that the tripods have lost their shield capacity. I advise that you should organize an attack on one of them, like that one." He points to a nearby trembling tripod; it had many black birds flocking above it, trying to peck it to enter inside as if it were waiting for someone to die. Taking that as a hint, the officer screams to a platoon of soldiers to prepare the military-purpose tentamissles for the attack.
I hold my breath, waiting to see the unstoppable machines become stoppable as my lover takes me away from the scene and into the mountains. Soon, small rockets were flying into the sky and striking the tripods, leaving a trail of colorful explosions on the metal plates of the machine, but most importantly, the blast left a large open hole. I began hearing the crowd and the soldiers celebrate the optimistic update as more and more rockets were fired onto all the tripods in the area, and within minutes they all trembled down onto the ground, and some even blew up from the result. The celebration grew louder and louder as many took their chances to climb up and chant above the wreckage.
I wasn't able to see the whole event, but that's where the tears came out of my eyes and onto my cheeks. With optimism from the noises of happiness, I arrived at a concealed bunker—the apparent safe place—somewhere deep in the woods of the mountain, and that's where I saw my whole friend group minding their own business, not expecting to see me. I saw many faces, like Melissa, Ruby, Shorthair, the old man, and much more.
When my lover allowed me to get back on my feet and he announced my presence to my friends, they went ballistic over me for the right reasons. Soon enough, I was hugged by most of my friends, with many awing for me.
"I thought you didn't make it!"
"I'm so glad you're still alive."
"Looks who's back, girl!"
That's where my story ends. I was comforted by my friends, received breakfast, recounted my story, and stayed for the remainder of the war until things improved. The war itself led to a triumphant victory for the inhabitants of Earth against the Martian invaders. Abandon their weapons and planes for colonization as a result.
The experience I had been through changed me in some way. I witnessed many horrible things, but I managed to overcome them in one way or another. Maybe it could have been my time down there in the metro, preparing for what's to come. Both were terrifying in one way or another, and both had villains who wanted to destroy our species. I beat the first example, and the diseases on earth crippled the invaders.
I had met many folks in this world, with some meeting horrible ends, but others mental states were devestated or ambious. The torment has ended, and a new world has grown out of the ashes of both the remnants of the Martians and the inhabitants of the world. Reconstruction had occurred right after it, with many willingly cooperating on such a task, but it did prove our marine spirit, which is now stronger than ever. A concern began growing regarding another invasion, but due to the devestating effects and the new technology reviewed from the downed machines, it may not be possible.
The Martians had learned their lesson—for now. The future may belong to us or the Martians.
