Shaak Ti waited with her padawan, Kancetto Kryze, who had only recently turned 21 years old about two months ago, as they stood outside the Jedi Trial Chambers, for Kancetto was about to take his trials to become a Jedi Knight. Silara was to be taking her trials to become a Jedi Knight tomorrow, as she herself had only turned 21 years old about two weeks ago.

The Jedi Trials were a process that padawans of the Jedi Order took in order to achieve the rank of Jedi Knight; it was a rite of passage. Jedi typically completed their trials in their young adult years, with some Jedi passing their trials as early as their teenage years.

When the Jedi High Council came into existence, they took on the responsibility of administering the Jedi Trials, which they gave to any padawan they deemed worthy of becoming a Jedi. The primary trials were a set of five: the Trial of Skill, the Trial of Courage, the Trial of the Flesh, the Trial of Spirit, and the Trial of Insight. In addition, the Council could assign substitute tests or use an exceptionally trying mission in place of the traditional tests. Like the initiate trials, these tests were required to be taken in order to proceed to the next rank in the Jedi Order.

The Jedi trials have been an integral tradition within the Jedi Order since its conception on Tython. When the Jedi High Council was formed, they went about reforming the Jedi Order, and these reforms saw the teachings of the Jedi Academy becoming mainstream because, before these reforms were made, the trials were highly informal, administered by a padawan's master, and known to be quite harsh and sometimes impossible.

As time passed, the trials became slightly more lax and saw a dramatic drop in standards during the New Sith Wars. To rectify this, the High Council formalized five tests, following the Ruusan Reformation, that would be given within the Jedi Trials Chamber in the Coruscant Jedi Temple. Deep in the temple, the specialized chamber was equipped with a state-of-the-art hologram projector capable of producing tangible simulacrums of ancient Jedi and Sith. In addition to the combat aspect of the trials, the room was designed to test other skills, many of which were created to replicate the uncertainty a Jedi would face in the field.

Shaak waited as long as she could with Kancetto before she too had to go in with the rest of the Jedi High Council, as due to her being a member of the Jedi High Council, she too had to watch the Jedi Trials, despite it being her student who was taking the trials. Though she was slightly nervous, her confidence in her padawan to pass the trials and ascend to the rank of Jedi Knight was high.

Due to the Trials of Knighthood being a rite of passage, Shaak Ti brought her padawan back to his home planet of Mandalore so that he could bathe in the Living Waters of Mandalore, which was a ceremonial ground located in the Mines of Mandalore, under the Civic Centre in the city of Sundari on Mandalore. The Living Waters were used as a ceremonial ground where the royal family would bathe in the water. Shaak brought Kancetto to Mandalore, and after receiving permission from his sister, Duchess Satine, he was permitted to bathe in the Living Waters of Mandalore, something that Satine herself had bathed in, something his royal ancestors did, and what he would now do.

Duchess Satine led the way, as Kancetto followed his sister and Shaak followed behind her padawan. They reached the bottom of the enclosed staircase, and once they got down, they saw a wide open mine and a walk space that also widened into a circular triangle. At the end of the walk, there were small steps that went down into the Living Waters of Mandalore. Mounted to the wall near the entrance of the ceremonial chamber was an aged metal plaque with a Mando'a inscription reading:

"Living Waters, these mines date back to the age of the first Mandalore. According to ancient folklore, the mines were once a Mythosaur lair. Mandalore the Great defeated and then rode the mythical beast. It is from these legends that the skull signet was adopted and became the symbol of our planet."
