Senator Padmé Amidala, while under the protection of Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Padawan Anakin Skywalker, had her life threatened once more. This time with the use of two Kouhuns poisonous arthropods during her sleep after they were delivered by an ASN-121 droid. Padawan Skywalker killed the two arthropods, and Master Kenobi jumped out the window latching onto the ASN-121 in the skylanes while the assassin Zam Wesell shot down her droid to have the fall kill Obi-Wan. Anakin, at the last second after "borrowing" an XJ-6 airspeeder, saved his Master from falling to his death. They then chased after the assassin, eventually catching her and questioning who employed her. She explained it was a bounty hunter, but before she could reveal the name of her employer, she was fatally shot with a toxic saberdart.

This led to the Jedi High Council tasking Obi-Wan to track down said bounty hunter and to find out who he was working for. The Jedi High Council then tasked Anakin to protect Senator Amidala with Master Windu instructing him to escort her back to Naboo believing she would be safer there and advised them to use unregistered transportation and to pose as refugees. Knowing Senator Amidala to be the leader of the opposition, she would not so easily leave her post as the leader of the opposition. It was asked if Chancellor Palpatine could sway her, and after an executive order she complied with. Padmé asked Junior Representative Jar Jar Binks to take her place in the Senate in her stead.

Kenobi went to see his old friend, the Besalisk Dexter Jettster, who was nicknamed Dex—in Dex's Diner in order to find more information about a toxic dart that was taken from the body of Zam Wesell. Dex told Kenobi that the dart belonged to the Kaminoans, a species who lived beyond the Outer Rim Territories. After he left the diner, Kenobi, with the assistance of Librarian Jocasta Nu, used the Jedi Archives to find the planet of Kamino, which was missing from the archives for unknown reasons, suggesting that it di not exist. Troubled, Kenobi decided to discuss the issue with Grand Master Yoda.

Yoda told Kenobi to travel to the coordinates. Kenobi found Kamino where the coordinates said it should be, near the Rishi Maze. He landed on the rainy ocean planet and was greeted by Kaminoan Taun We, who took Kenobi to Lama Su, the Prime Minister of Kamino. Su told Kenobi about a clone army that they had created for the Galactic Republic and to tell the Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas that the order would be shipped on schedule, confusing Kenobi as the Jedi Master had been dead for a decade. The two Kaminoans revealed that the host was a Mandalorian bounty hunter named Jango Fett. The same bounty hunter hired Zam Wessell to kill Senator Amidala.

Kaminoans were slender, towering, pale-skinned humanoids whose oblong heads sat atop elongated neck bones that allowed them limited flexibility. They had two large, almond-shaped black eyes with white pupils that enabled them to see into the ultraviolet spectrum. Male Kaminoans had fin-like crests atop their heads, while females were completely bald and wore unique head crescents. Their long and frail limbs gave them a graceful, gliding walk and featured small feet adapted to their homeworld's firm seabeds and later hard flooring. Kaminoans reached adulthood at 11 years old.

Obi-Wan contacted Yoda and Mace Windu, reporting his findings, and he was instructed to bring Jango Fett back to the Jedi Temple for questioning. However, Jango Fett and his genetically unaltered clone son Boba Fett were fleeing from Kamino, resulting in a duel between Obi-Wan and Jango, which resulted in Jango escaping, though not without unknowing having had a homing device put on his ship Slave I. Obi-Wan followed them with his starfighter to the planet of Geonosis. Kenobi engaged Fett over the asteroid field above the planet and would go on to learn more of the assassination attempt on Amidala on Geonosis when he intercepted Fett. On Geonosis, Obi-Wan discovered that the Separatists were in the process of making a droid army.

Master Yoda conceded that the Jedi Order had to be blind if they could not see the creation of the clone army. Master Windu believed it right to inform the Senate that the ability of the Jedi to use the Force had diminished. Master Yoda responded by saying that only the Dark Lord of the Sith knew of the weakness of the Jedi, and if the Senate were informed, they would only be multiplying their adversaries.
