chapter seventeen

———◈—◇—◈—◇———

"God dammit!" you cursed a little too loudly, slamming your hand down on the counter in front of you.

The barista at Indigo - Namjoon - raised an eyebrow at you in surprise at the register. "Bad day?"

You sighed, feeling a little bad for taking all of this out on the unsuspecting man making your coffee. "Yeah," you nodded dejectedly. "You could say that. I had a bad day at work, and now..."

You indicated down at your empty handbag. "I left my credit card at work," you finished with a miserable mumble.

A week had passed since Rae's birthday, and on the whole, things had been going swimmingly. When you weren't at work, you were with Taehyung. Officially, it was because you needed to get the Dream House pitch together for the presentations next week.

But unofficially... very little actual work was being done.

In the last week, you'd felt happier than you had in a long time. You hadn't touched each other any more than what he had suggested the night of Rae's birthday - hadn't progressed to becoming more intimate yet - but it didn't matter. You knew you were leading up to that in time.

For now, being with him made you happy - not in the way that those big, epic romances described, but more like a contentment in your soul. A feeling of belonging. Of home.

Today, however, had put an end to that bubble of bliss.

After a very trying day at work, you'd just needed to blow off some steam, figuring a nice warm cup of coffee would make you feel better. And now you were here, unable to even order any, because you'd dashed out of work so quickly that you'd left your purse on your desk.

You sighed again. Typical.

Namjoon just grinned at you, deep dimples piercing his cheeks as he did so, ringing up your usual order. "Don't worry. It's on the house."

"Oh, - no, I couldn't let you-" you began to protest, but Namjoon was already waving a dismissive hand, switching the coffee machine on.

"It's cool, I know you're good for it," he said as the coffee machine whirred, his voice bright. "Besides, it's not like you're never coming back. You live upstairs, right?"
