The sound of my heels clicking against the marble floors ricocheted as I strode to my office.

The law firm wasn't as busy as it normally was, so I managed to snag an elevator ride by myself. That gave me time to breathe and gather all of my thoughts.

Once the elevator dinged, I was on the right floor. A smile engulfed my face as I revelled in the fact that I had the floor to myself—my office was the biggest in the building.

I mean, my last name was on the side of the building, so it was a given.

The best part was that I worked alongside my best friend, which gave me a warm feeling every time I came to work. She was my secretary, but I had an assistant.

"Any messages?" I asked Alani as I entered our office space.

She busied herself with something on her computer. When I caught a glimpse, I could see she was online shopping.

I shook my head, chuckling to myself.

"I don't think so." She responded, moving some hair from her face. "But I've kinda been in the zone here."

I walked towards my desk, noticing three compartment type things stacked up. I tilted my head as I placed my handbag down.

"You weren't going to mention these?" I questioned, loud enough for Alani to hear. Once she was in the zone, it was hard to communicate with her.

"Why would I need to mention them? They're the first things you see."

I rolled my eyes, examining them. "Micromacks? I thought Dave Cohen was handling this merger."

"Nope. The client said he was too emotional." She absentmindedly spoke, with her eyes glued to her screen. "They wanted a ruthless law robot, so..."

"Micromacks." I opened a binder that'd been left on top of the three compartments. "All right, get Dave on the phone. I'm gonna need all materials and I want to set up dates for deposition."

I walked around my desk until I comfortably plopped down. Crossing one Louboutin over the other.

When I looked up, Alani was stood at the door frame that joined our two office spaces.

"I don't know why you work so hard." She shrugged, folding her arms. "The best part about being pretty is that you don't have to."

I sighed, relaxing more into my seat. My eyes meeting hers as I gave her my undivided attention.

"I mean, you don't see me walking around here, worrying about my job, do you?"

I squinted my eyes. "Unfortunately, no."

"That's because I have a Carmelo. Okay?" She wagged a finger my way. "He works."

"Lala-"

"I come here because it's like having a hobby that pays well."

"You work in a law firm?" I knitted my brows. "I'm not sure this counts as a hobby." I spoke more so to myself, than to her.

"Oh, and by the way, a message was left here for you to confirm that you were still on for drinks with Lewis." Alani sashayed her way to the seat in front of my desk. Once she was seated, her arms were crossed over her chest. "Who's Lewis?"

"He's the guy I'm talking to." I smugly announced, turning my nose up.

"Obviously, but which one?"

"The only one." Hopefully.
