James picked up a pistol and an assault rifle, even though he had no clue how to handle either of them. He tried to act cool, hoping to impress Jill with his false expertise.
Jill was casually leaning against the wall, arms crossed, patiently waiting for James to be ready.
"You ready for this?"
"Yeah, totally," James replied, mustering up confidence as they started their ascent up the stairs.
Just as they reached the top, James heard a beep in his ear, and Carlos's voice came through the earpiece. "Jill, James, can you hear me? Is this thing working?"
"We hear you," James responded.
"So, what's the plan up here?" Jill asked.
"We need you two to get the Infrastructure back online," Carlos explained.
Jill crossed her arms, sounding a bit skeptical. "And how exactly are we supposed to do that?"
Carlos chuckled softly. "Well, for starters, turning the power back on would be a good idea."
"Got it," James said in agreement.
Jill stood tall, her confidence shining through. "I know where the Subway's power terminal is. I'll lead the way."
James playfully saluted and gestured for Jill to go ahead. "Yes, ma'am, lead the charge!"
Exiting the subway, the chaos outside painted a grim picture. James's heart sank as he witnessed survivors, panic-stricken and running for their lives.
"In here! It's safe!" James called out, motioning towards the subway, urging the survivors to seek shelter.
As a zombie crept around the corner, James barely had time to react before Jill swiftly put two bullets in its head, taking it down instantly.
"Whoa," James exclaimed, unable to contain his surprise. "You really know what you're doing."
Jill flashed him a quick smile, her eyes shining with confidence, before continuing to move forward.
As they cautiously made their way through the area, their eyes fell upon a transmission tower, the key to restoring power.
"That's the tower we need to get to," Jill pointed out, her voice determined.
"Oh, well, maybe we can cut through this alley right here," James suggested optimistically. However, as soon as he turned the corner, his face fell. The alley was completely engulfed in flames, blocking their path.
"You mean the alley that's on fire?" Jill chuckled, amused by James's failed attempt.
James smirked playfully. "Surely, a tall drink of water like yourself could put out a few flames."
Jill rolled her eyes and playfully punched James in the shoulder. "Fuck you." she said with a smirk.
"Guys, there's a firehouse not too far. You'll probably be able to find a hose there," Carlos instructed through their earpiece.
Before they could even respond to Carlos, another nearby fence collapsed, revealing a horde of a dozen zombies rapidly approaching them. Jill remained composed, readying her gun for the impending threat.
"Wait!" James shouted, his voice filled with an unexpected determination. He swiftly aimed and fired at a nearby gas barrel. The resulting explosion engulfed the zombies in a fiery blast, taking them all down in one fell swoop.
Jill stared at James in awe, a mix of surprise and admiration visible on her face. "Wow, that was quite something," she said, her voice filled with genuine amazement.
Chuckling modestly, James couldn't help but feel a surge of confidence. "Learning from the best here," he responded, a wide grin spreading across his face. It felt amazing to finally impress Jill in such a high-pressure situation.
They made their way to the nearby firehouse, James eagerly grabbing the hose while Jill kept a watchful eye. They quickly returned to the alley, plugging the hose into a fire hydrant, and began to douse the flames. The hiss of extinguished fire filled the air as the smoke slowly dissipated.
Entering another building, the pair spotted a man slumped against the wall, his body covered in a mess of wounds. Concerned, they hurried over to him.
"Are you U.B.C.S?" Jill questioned, her voice laced with urgency as she applied pressure to his wound.
"Yeah... Careful! Careful!" the man gasped, his words strained.
James knelt down, his eyes quickly scanning the man's injuries, taking note of the harrowing wounds covering his body.
"Don't look at me like that. I'm not infected, I swear," the man defended himself, his voice filled with desperation.
"It's okay. I didn't say you were," James said compassionately.
The injured man's eyes flickered with fear as he stared just past James and Jill. "No, no, wait, please-"
Before anyone could react, the deafening sound of a gunshot echoed through the room. Time seemed to slow down as the man's body jerked, a bullet piercing his skull. Jill gasped in horror, her hand instinctively flying to her mouth, as blood splattered across her face.
Their eyes widened in shock as they saw another man standing there, his white hair contrasting with the darkness surrounding them. His cold, calculating gaze met theirs, seemingly devoid of any remorse.
"What the hell was that?" James demanded angrily.
"He was infected," the man said nonchalantly.
"He MIGHT have been infected," Jill snapped, her anger bubbling to the surface.
The man scoffed dismissively before turning to walk away. "Is everyone this soft? No wonder why everyone is dead," he muttered, his words dripping with contempt.
"And what about you? Killing your own people!" Jill fired back, her voice filled with accusation.
"I advise you guys to go back to the subway station. We don't need any more bleeding hearts out here," he retorted, his tone laced with a sense of grim practicality. With those words, he opened a nearby door, slamming it shut behind him.
"Fuck that guy," James muttered, his voice seething with frustration.
"Yeah, you said it," Jill replied, her gaze lingering on the unfortunate man who had been shot. "Well, unfortunately, there's nothing we can do for him now. Let's focus on getting the subway power back up."
