He was writing back for one reason. Okay fine, two. One, Fintan had ordered him locked in his room, and he was dying of boredom.
Two, she had addressed the letter to Keefe. Not to Lodestar, but to Keefe. For the first time, he felt like someone had seen him.
Lodestar was his name in the Neverseen. But Keefe was who he really was.
Alone in his room, Keefe took in her letter, reading and rereading every word, every sentence. And then he drafted his reply. Sharpening his pencil, he flipped over her paper, and wrote on the back.
Why kill any more trees than they already did in battle?
Dear Sophie,
I don't know why I'm writing back. Maybe you're right. Maybe it's psychology. But whatever it is, here I am.He was going to leave it at that, but he couldn't bring himself to. Why lie, when he didn't have to?
You know what? That's a lie. I'm writing back because you called me Keefe. Because when I'm Keefe, you're not the Moonlark and I'm not Lodestar. We're just two kids. Two kids who were told that we're soulmates. That brings me to the question. What is a soulmate? What are they for, really? That's what we have to figure out. That's why, both of us are going to keep sending these letters back and forth, on and on. Don't cry, Sophie. Don't cry, because this isn't the end. It's the beginning. The beginning of what I hope is the end. The end of the Council, the end of the Black Swan, and the end of the Neverseen.
Again, he planned to leave it at that. But again, his conscience stopped him.
But not the end of us.
With love,
Keefe***
She was overjoyed. His letter, though crumpled, had reached her room safely. At first, she was afraid.
Saw her own writing and thought, maybe he's still mad... and didn't write back. But then, she flipped it over. And his words, they hit her like a bullet.
Who knew beneath his smirks and jokes, he was wise? Wise beyond his years. God, that sounded cheesy. But it was true. Oddly so.
She found herself reading his letter so many times her eyes burned. She would smooth it out, and read it, and start drafting her letter back. But nothing sounded right. Her trash became full of crumpled paper, full of words that would never be heard.
She knew.
Knew that a letter was never going to be enough for her.
She needed to see him.
See him in person.
So she took a risk, a huge one. But it was midnight, after all, less dangerous.
She created a portal.
And pictured Keefe Sencen.

He almost screamed. But she clamped a hand over his mouth.
"Shhh," he heard her whisper, "Do you want me to get caught?!"
"Why are you here?" he hissed.
"To see you, of course." He could see her smirking even in the dim light. She sat next to him on his bed, her feet kicking the bed frame.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
The rhythmic beating of her shoes against the wood lulled him into a feeling of security, and he decided, why not play along?
"Alright, you've seen me. Let's talk."
And they did. Hours and hours of just talking. His voice became sore, but he still kept laughing, joking. Cause she was contagious.
And definitely dangerous. She could kill him in a heartbeat. He could kill her in a flash.
There was nothing that justified their relationship. But Keefe was falling hard.
Falling in love.
A/N: Did you see that coming? Me, writing fluff. I know you didn't :) Don't worry, the fluff won't last long...
