5-12: War Prep

Interu: (I thought that I would be able to enjoy the winter season with all its snow.

Y'know, snowball fights, going skiing and stuff like that?

And I did, for a bit.

As in, it only worked to distract me from what's going on for so long.

More and more soldiers, weapons, armour, food and other supplies are being transported to Keren County week by week.

As if that wasn't indicative enough, there are talks of camps being set up further north to monitor the frontlines.

Everyone is on high alert, looking out for spies.

Some are looking to leave, to avoid the incoming trouble.

Others stayed, to support the soldiers.

I...did my part and made sure the people leaving town to find refuge further into Sariella made it there safely, at least to the closest town.

The bandit outbreak is still an issue after all, so I regularly check and clear the route.

And I don't feel confident leaving Vampy undefended for any longer than those trips.

Maybe I should use my [Spatial Magic] to help out, but then I am afraid that people would start demanding that help.

Like, if they were unreasonable and tried to overwork me, and I refused to help because of that, then I would risk burning bridges that can't be repaired, and making enemies.

So better to let things remain as they are, and help from the shadows.

I have been warned by the local lord himself, that Ohts is looking for an excuse to go to war.

It didn't matter that their diplomat was absolute scum and that no one should be bothered by his death.

Even with the evidence of his despicable crimes, they will be dismissed in favour of conquest.

If I hadn't killed him, at worst we would have to release him back to Ohts despite his crimes to keep the peace.

But that doesn't account for our side, the incident becoming public only made the people's hatred for Ohts worse.

And there have always been talks about taking over the entrance to the labyrinth, and how it will significantly increase the power and status of Sariella.

So Sariella is raring to go to war as well.

...I didn't want to dwell on the problem, so I solved it haphazardly to go back to enjoying my life, and in doing so set off a bomb with the sparks from my carelessness.

And now everyone is paying the price for it.

I want to say it's inevitable, but it's not like I tried to broker peace between the countries, to quell Sariella's hatred for Ohts, to challenge Ohts' desire for war.

I just sat by and hoped things wouldn't go to hell.
