I never expected the ride to be so long. We've been sitting in the wagon for about 4 hours. Bertholdt asks the driver how much longer till we reach camp. "About 4 more hours! Now will you leave me alone?" Gosh, you terd, you're so mean! Everyone turns to look at me. "What? Did I say something?" "Yeah, you did!" Reiner bursts out laughing. Annie has the smallest of smiles on her face, and Bertholdt is smiling and blushing. Dear God, I've already embarrassed myself and I'm not even at the training facility! I turn to face the back opening of the wagon. There's a rustling and footsteps coming from Bertholdt's end of the wagon. I look to my right to see he's sitting beside me. "The scenery sure is nice isn't it?" He's blushing again. Why does he blush so much? "Yeah, it's quite beautiful." I reply with a sigh. "Why did you sigh?" Uh. "It just reminds me of my old home." "Where? I mean where did you used to live?" "Bert, you sound like a creep! Ha-ha!" Reiner interrupts. I glare at him, and Annie elbows him in the stomach again. I turn to Bertholdt, "You don't sound like a creep, it's perfectly normal to ask that. I used to live in uh... Shiganshina." Bertholdt looks straight into my eyes, "So you must have witnessed the Titan attack firsthand!" "Yeah I did." I am about to turn back to look out my window when he grabs my arm. "I am sorry for what you must have seen, it must have been terrible for you to go through." " It wasn't your fault. You'd be surprised at what I can take. What about you? Did you see any Titans?" At this Bertholdt frowns, "Yes I saw them." I take his hand off of my arm and hold it in my own. Oh God! What am I doing? "I'm sorry...but anyways, where did you live before all hell broke loose?" I try to slide my hand away from his but it's kind of hard since he actually is gripping it very tightly. "Reiner, Annie and I used to live in a small village far away from Shiganshina." "Do you have any family?" He let's go of my hand, "Not any more. Do you have any family?" Should I tell him? What if it makes him feel worse? Whatever I guess it doesn't matter, and he's looking at me waiting for an answer. "Yes I do have some family." Bertholdt leans his head back against the wood railing. "Do you mind if I set here for the rest of the ride?" Now it was my turn to blush, "No, I don't mind at all." I smile and lean my head back also.
*Half an hour later*
Bertholdt is sound asleep right next to me. The wagon rolls over a stone and his head rolls into my shoulder. This action seems a little forced, as it he made himself do that. I could just be looking into things too much. We carry on through the wagon ride like this for thirty more minutes. The wagon hits another stone and it's like he kind of startles, but doesn't startle awake. During this startling he grabs my hand and holds onto it. I'm blushing like crazy. I glance up to see Reiner snickering, and Annie trying to get him to be quiet. What are they snickering about? Oh...well I'll just ignore them and try to sleep. I am blushing so bad. The wagon jolts again and Bertholdt grips my hand even harder. Just sleep and not blush, just sleep and not blush! Really I don't sleep, I just have my eyes closed. It's always been hard for me to keep my eyes closed when I'm not sleeping. What if something happens and I'm too late to notice anything?Bertholdt was right, we wouldn't have anybody else in the wagon till a little while before we get to the training facility. Even as new people started getting on the wagon he still held onto my hand. He didn't let go until Reiner woke him up when we got to camp. I was woken up by Annie. I don't think that she knows of the word gentle. Or any other word that correlates with it either. I sat up and looked for my suitcase and saw Bertholdt holding it. "I can carry it for you." I looked up at him, "No thanks, I can get it on my own. But thank you for the offer." Reiner speaks, "Don't you remember Bert? She doesn't accept help unless she really needs it!" "At least I know what I can and can't do, and at least I know my limits. You don't seem to know when to stop running your big mouth however, and that in itself is proof you don't know your limits." "Big words from a small person. Do you really know your limits?" I give a wry smile, "You'll see." I hop out of the wagon and head to my cabin. I turn to see Bertholdt staring at me. I give a little wave, and he gives one back, then turns to head to his cabin.
Oh no. I came here to train not have a crush. This is not good at all.
